A habit I got
« on: December 28, 2008, 08:52:49 pm »
Never notice this before my wife told me. I always put my socks on the right foot first and my shoes or boots on the left foot first.

If I listed all my bad habits, or at least the one's my wife claims I have, I'd soon run out of space.
Such as:
1. Falling asleep when she's talking--I have narcolepsy.
2, Interrupting when she's talking--I'm hard of hearing and she talks softly.
3. Not hearing a word she says--It helps if she would remain in the same room and not turn her back, see above.  On this one, she gets grumpy when I point out she's in the laundry room loading the washer/dryers and I'm in the bedroom.
4. Can't remember a blasted thing--I've had head injuries and my memory has long been suspect.
5. Pay attention--I'm hard of hearing words that sound similar create a lot of confussion.

See what I mean?

I have a few "THINGS" I do that are imprinted on my mind by my Mom, taught me when I was a child.

The biggest is that I NEVER put any type of hat on a table, it is the BIGGEST bringer of BAD LUCK to a home. I shreak when coworkers toss their's on our PC work station or breakroom table and I will not touch it in anyway, nor do I place my stuff on that table. Okay, it sounds like I'm scarred by this bad luck harbinger of negativity, but I can not help it.

I also fear doing anything at 11:11am/pm I even hated typing it just then. My post about 11:11 is one of the most read posts in the darkside and I think for good reasons. People (like me and my wife too) may not look at a clock for hours and then just a simple glance at it and sure enough it is plastered with those four simple digits - doing the math: 60 minutes times 24 hours a day, devided by 2 leaves us with pretty poor odds of seeing this particular time randomly, but it happens very often. May people have similar incidences with 3:33 and other times.

I always place my foot on the brake, then shift the car into gear BEFORE placing my seatbelt on - I always wear the belt but never before shifting into a gear with my foot firmly on the brakes.

There is a medical reason (explain soon) that I do my best to NEVER drive as the sun goes below the tree tops - the sun flashing at different rates as it passes the trees creates strobe frequencies that trigger headaches (and now epilepsy) so at work I'll either get out early when the sun is higher or wait for it to set.

I think we all are creatures of habits, and both good and bad habits are equally hard to break. Some are impossible, whether you want to or not, because self preservation kicks in and if your mind thinks you are setting yourself up for bad Karma, then you with either consciously or unconsciously doing what is necessary to reduce your bad luck.

We are strange creatures, from opening umbrellas, 13th floors in buildings, stepping on cracks and probably thousands of other quirks rule our lives in ways we don't even notice.

Irwin, what shapes us can be so minute' that we never know how it begins, sometimes it gets nuerotic and sadly many times it becomes obsessive and controls us. Your sock and shoe thing reminds me of Tracey who sneezes FOUR TIME in a ROW, never three, never 5 and forget one or two - lol. My father also was a rapid sneezer who would nearly faint as he blew out every bit of air in his lungs in machine like fashion, I swear he all but would go down on his knees as he evacuated what little air he could muster between sneezes.

Accepting the differences in us all is what makes us special and unique. Your wife should see that and be thankful for the way you do it - it is a small part of what makes you, you! Besides, if you have your foot up on your knee putting on socks and shoes, once you place a sock on that second foot, it seems silly to lower that leg and raise the other JUST to place a shoe on it - your method make perfectly good sense to me, it saves a needless step if I'm counting right :)

Yeah, you list all those excuses.  But I see something in common with all of those, something that plagues me daily....

About three years ago I put my left boot on first and later that day fell off my motorcycle. Since then I always put my right sock and boot on first.

I know, completely irrational, but broken ribs hurt and I never want that to happen again.

If you want to see oddities of behavior, spend time around professional athletes.  They have to do certainthings certain ways or it jinks them and they lose.  Baseball players are probably the worst/funniest.

Brian:
and hus another DAD QUOTE:

People are creatures of habit, both good and bad - own their habit and you will own them!

This was something he said to me when I started the debate team in 1973 and it worked. Ome boy would change his speed to enhance a point of view about to be stated. When it was my turn, I tried first duplicating him, which erritate him and later I reversed the way he's tempo his side oppositly, emphasising the unimportant stuff exactly different then he.

He would be so dazed and of ppace by round three, it was as if it was his first read and I owned him.

Which is harder you may ask to break, a good or bad habit? The answer is a good on, bad habits are not fun to break, but you've already accepted then to be bad (no matter how bad) but good ones, you have gotten into a rotine of doing things right, allbeit often compulsive - going back to a normal act or a reasonalably bad on is a far stretch if you have given in to a good habit.

Simple put, to give up bad habits, you need to disassociate yourself with others also oing bad habits - with good ones, you give up friends are doing nothing wrong. It is hard for the mind to justify not doing something it clearly sees as right.

Why give up good habits, to many people it is not necessary, the addict od compulsive behaviour, the are really thin line from obsessively cleaning a sink 12 time a dat, arranging cans of food alphabetically and lables facing foward in eveb row, etc. All they need to do is change single habits, often requiring a major life change, but it has less baggage and is reward by those knowing your efforts. Good habit withdraw often has no fan fair at all. Just a thought.

I wouldn't call it a habit exactly but I use to have to have things done perfectly, if I was doing them that is. Sometimes I would get so frustrated that I would just give up on the project all together. Some have probably caught me doing it here. Sometimes I post something and later have to go back and correct a misspelled word or typo. (Anybody notice that?)

I have literally forced myself many times to just stop and say "good enough".

Dang I have the same symptoms, is it catchy do you live close, where the heck am I.
