how are the beekeepers in the southeast storing their empty supers during the winter? we used to stack them on an upside down telescoping cover then put some crystals on the top one and cover it with another telescoping cover and that kept the wax moth out until the we used the again but it's a different world now.
my goal is to set up a walk in freezer for storing them eventually but until then i'm trying to figure out a chemical free way of doing it.

thanks but that doesn't sound chemical free.
it doesn't look like it will really be an issue for me this year. i'm taking quotes on a 40x60 steel building now. i may as well start looking at the cost of the walk in while i'm at it.

I am not doing a lot of supers, but after extracting, letting the bees clean them, I put them in 55 gal trash bags and wire tie them, and store. Good luck farmer.

I do the same as Joe D. I then put bag in 55 gal food grade poly drum.

Depends on what you call chemicals. Sugar water and honey are chemicals. BT is a biological spore, not a man made poison.

It is considered chemical free. It can also be found under the name Xentari

Is that the stuff you can add to standing water to kill mosquito larvae? It seems like I read that at least certain strains affect something in the gut of honeybees if it is. I'll read it a little closer. What does it do for hive beetles?
This year I'll probably go with the plastic bags and drums. I found a 12x12 walk in freezer for around 7k. The ag bank approved me for more than I had budgeted so I may just go for it if I can make my numbers work.
-
It does nothing for hive beetle. You have to get the correct strain for wax moth. There are several different strains. It is approved for organic gardening. It (the bt) was once sold under the name certan in the US by Sandoz but they did not renew the license because you can by the Xentari for a fraction of the cost.
-
That sounds like the same stuff. Let's hope I can pull off the walk in. That would solve a lot of problems. I think 12x12 at 7'6" high will hold over 400 mediums. It will be a few years before I need that kind of space unless I find somebody getting out of beekeeping selling off an entire operation.

Not allowed to, post and sell over here! He tried but left when he couldn't. I could tell you something about the way he started selling it and how he found out about it but it is a sore subject :-X

sounds like something I really don't want to know.
so where can I purchase stuff?

Farm co-ops your way have it. Used on some vegetables. Make sure you get the Xentrai or Agree. Valent distributes it. Not thuracide (sp)
Large ag co-ops. I know orangeburg has it but may be a 5lb bag. You would never use it all

Sorry sc--I'll be treating 17 colonies. If this stuff works as stated, it sounds like a "no brainer" for weak hives. Spray bees and comb. As well as treating stored comb.
BTW, I keep my feelings in safe in a tic tac container. :-D
-
:-D i like that.
I would not bother spraying comb with bees unless infested. No need. I found that a gallon will spray 60-90 frames.
