Plans Needed for Lumber Rack (storage)
« on: January 10, 2015, 10:31:46 am »
Was thinking about building a lumber rack in the barn for the 2x4,6,8,12 I have left over from other projects.   I'd like to build a cart of some type for my plywood too.  My barn post run at 8' apart.  Was thinking of using a 2"x6"x12' horizontally and 2"x4" vertically for the lumber rack.  I'd like a cart that was portable that I could lean full sheets of ply on.
Has anyone seen plans or have pictures of something that works?

JV,
I built a plywood rack in my pole barn. It is across a 12' span between 2 poles. I used -2x6 yellow pine for all of the wood. Ends look like this:

            P
            P
            P
            P
XXXXXXXXXXXXX
  X.       P        X
     X.    P.    X
        X. P. X

The P is the pole and the X's are 2x6's I put 2x6's vertical between the 2 frames with 2x6's horizontal on top. I used 20d nails that I predrilled, to prevent splitting, through the 2x6's to fasten them to the poles.
I made it real sturdy and I'm glad because it is holding a lot of weight, it is full of 3/4" plywood.
The top is 48" wide.
I made it so that as soon as I use the plywood I could then use it as a 4'x12' work table.

What are you using for shelf supports?

Saw,
Took me a bit to figure out.
You are using the 2x6 as diagonals from the bottom.
I just build an 8' work bench, wish I had figured sooner.

I tried to include an image but I can't get it right side up.
