Hi, All!
Last season I have good result growing these golden roots under the
trees. It is in another section of my shaded garden that I devote a fairly large
plot under the tree's canopy. Right now is another new growing season in
mid-March. I have already seen many new shoots sprouting out of the ground from last year's plants. So I've ordered a few hundred dollars worth of golden roots and stratified seeds for this season. I hope to naturalize the entire plot under the trees with these interesting plants. Who ever tell you that they will not do good under a hot and dry semi-desert condition here has not try them yet. Anybody growing these?

If you grow them in N.C., the gov. will give you free room and board, buy all your clothes, and pay all your medical bills.

My hollow is chock full of them or at least used to be. Any place you can easily get to with a four wheeler has been dug out. 30 yrs ago it was matted out in four prong plants.

Ok I will bite. What is Golden Root? I see they sell it as a powder.

Marijuana, cannabis, pot, wacky backy, weed, and a few other nick names.

The pictures look like ginseng to me.

Sorta looks like ginseng.
Very valuable if you can grow it.
I've spent a few $ on root plantings.

OK, so there's two Appalachian golds?
That's what we called the local native pot when I was younger.
-
Well, now I know.
The leaves in image 2 fooled me.

About 10 years ago while I was at work, I was looking at my farm on google maps and saw a large bright green spot in my forest. I made a mental note to check it the next weekend. That week we had a major storm that did a lot of damage. A few weeks later, my neighbor tells me that a helicopter was flying high overhead when it started dropping down and circling around that same area. The next day a black suburban drives up the dirt road and then down the fire break just out side my fence. My neighbor and his friends heard chain saws and could smell MJ. Then the black surburban left. I always figured it was feds but they never contacted me, ever.
Makes you wonder what ever happened that MJ tree.

Common names of plants can throw you a loop. In our herb class it is stressed to know the botanical name as well. Here's a link where you can learn to pronounce botanical names;

Jim, you didn't point out that tree to us when we went for our walk around your farm at Beefest.

An update:
Hi, All!
Somehow our CA weather is much much cooler than last year around this time. These golden roots responded favorably with plenty of
rains (mid-May), sunshine, and cool weather. Seeing this trend I'm taking advantage of it by growing more next week or so. Maybe starting another
patch or 2.
Let's see what they look like.
I call this one:

There are some stranger ones, (tangle, hunch, etc.) that I cannot show you on an open forum!

An update:
It is now in early June. The weather is still cooler than usual. Last year at this time it was hot at
107F. By taking advantage of this cooler weather, I'm putting in another wild golden roots patch. This time it is
3X as big as the last one with lots of organic compost added.
And this time I've installed a dripper system into the new patch as well. Our summer dearth can be
quite dry if it is not under an irrigation system. After this is done, I will work in some granulated azomite to further
provide the needed micro-nutrients for these wild roots. The first patch already have the large green berries after flowering. Hopefully by
this time next year I will see some berries from this patch too. Wish me luck!
