Title: Propolis traps
Post by: charlie b on November 10, 2013, 09:19:07 am
For those who use propolis traps, does it slow down brood rearing and or honey production?

As far as I know, the are supposed to go on in August, when the bees start to batten down the hatches. Brood rearing is on the decline then and honey is just getting cured.

I would assume they would have no impact on brood rearing or honey production if put on earlier, but then again, I add extra ventilation in the summer anyways.

Thanks Merince. I have checked the past topics on propolis and have come up short. I have an interest in making Propolis tincture next yr and was wondering if it would slow the brood and honey down. Two things I don't want to happen! I have time to do more research. Thanks for your time with your answer!

I noticed that during the period, traps are set on the hives, bees attacking more. If this happens all the other activities can slow down.
But i believe that what happened to my hives was because of the opening i left on the top of the hive in order to make air move faster and fill the trap faster. Next time i will place it in a safer way and wait more!

Bees like to bee busy and like to work, there is pollen but not much nectar in the late summer - fall, seems like a good idea that they can work with gathering propolis

Thanks ThomasGR and Edward...Looking forward to putting the traps on next fall. Hoping to collect enough to make a tincture that will be for sale when It's done. Trying to cash in on the bee chemists.

No worries about brooding at all. Bees usually starts to produce propolis intensively after the main honey gathering. You can easily collect them at that period.

Note, all gaps under the roof should be embedded before wintering.

Charlie, I know this is an older post but was wondering how things turned out for you?

Thanks Jim I know you are being helpful, I did look at that. The though is if he still has the same email address, he should still be getting a notification if someone such as myself hits his topic. Who knows he may start posting again.  That is of course he has not deactivated notifications. Some of the conversation is interesting and even if none of the original posters respond, perhaps some of our active members may be interested and chime in.

It slows down nothing at all.  A pollen trap will slow things down a little because they need pollen.  Propolis gathering is more "busy work" if everything else is already getting done.
