Title: Wow! We might actually reach 50?F next week
Post by: Aroc on March 11, 2018, 06:27:35 pm
 The forecast shows we might get to 50?F in a couple of days. Of course it starts dropping off. My worry is this cold weather will continue for another few weeks. I have queens coming starting mid April. Tried to get a jump on  swarm season since last year didn?t go so well.

I worry about shipping. What is more harmful to shipping Queens? Too warm or too cold?

Mailed queens in Aussie are in air-conditioning from despatch
to delivery. FedX .??.. dunno, sorry.
Queens in packages of bees will be fine, anywhere.

Hey Aroc, glad to hear warmth is headed your way!!!

Bill, Etalia, Montana is next to Canada, extreme North US that is where Aroc is from, minus 32F yearly.

Heat 115F will kill a queen quickly, cold 45F will kill a queen slowly.  I would think April delivery would be OK in Montana,, just being optimistic as we don?t know the temps.  I have seen snow in Montana on the 4th of July in valleys, not talking the Mountains.  Keep your fingers crossed.
Blessings

Air delivery is even colder up there.  Who knows where they put the live animals at.
Does cold reduced the semen count in queen bee too?   Hopefully the attendants will keep
her warm.

Beepro {Does cold reduced the semen count in queen bee too?}

That, my friend is a very good question.  I received queens last August from a very reputable Apiary.  Unfortunately the Cordovan queens did not lay well if at all.  You may have provided the reason, maybe not the cold, but in August the heat caused the queens >little soldiers< to die losing fertility.  Heat at 104F and higher kills spermatozoa.

Very good thought, Beepro.
