'Bout time you posted it...I've been checkin' in every 30 mins or so since you told me about it....was worth the wait!

Beautiful thing to see right under you huh? I bet you won't forget a change of underware next time you go into the woods!  :-D

Sure would make a nice rug.

Jim, not 100 yards from where I saw the bears was a huge fallen tree that the bears had obviously torn apart, bear scat everywhere around that tree. It was evident they were going through it to get to beetle larvae.

Them suckers were not hurting for food in the slightest!

Scott, I believe the big one's coat could cover my entire bed!

Beautiful animals & not a worry in the world!

2 questions, Were bears not in season?   And why were you having to drag that deer out by foot with a 4 wheeler sitting on the road?

Great video.  :)

Very cool. That camera was a little shaky at first.....a little bear fever perhaps?
Maybe they could smell some honey on ya.

Closest I've been to a bear while hunting was in Camp Blanding. Came across fresh bear scat. Your video is way cool, I would have pulled up the rope before before he could pull me out of the tree.  ;)
I did walk within 20' of a female with cubs in Cades Cove in TN. Wasn't the same with 10 other people there also.  :)

Great video.  :)

They are federally protected at this time in Louisiana. Only way I would have shot one is if he was removing my flesh. Huge penalties if you cannot prove your case!

Mike, video was taken with my iphone. Pretty neat huh? And to think its has 5 mega pixels, my first digital camera had 3. The new iphones have 8 mega pixels!

Me and my bro-in-law were in Skagway, AK for a few days (free cruise, airplane engine trouble, missed the boat, ...a nice story).  Anyhow we had camped out (actually packed our sleeping bags *in case* we got a chance to camp out!) under some park benches, and just bummed around a while.  Two roads lead out of Skagway...one up to White Pass and the other one is a gravel road that dead-ends basically at a glacier.  This particular day we took the gravel road. ;)   We had parked the car down beside an incredibly blue glacier water river and walked up to the wooden one-lane bridge to have a toast of some south Alabama rye whiskey that I had accidentally packed.  We were sitting there on the bridge railing over the middle of that blue river and had toasted that glacier water or the mountains or most anything else we could think of when I turned to say something to my brother-in-law.  Looking past him at the end of the bridge, between us and our rental car was a brown bear and two cubs.  Well now, wasn't that an interesting situation.  The bears looking at us, us looking at the bears.  It was the "Hey, cool!"..."Wow!!!"..."Look at that!!!" conversation in a hushed voice to start with.  That quickly lead to "I think they want to come across the bridge".  I still kid my bro-in-law about his "Maybe if we sit real still they'll pass in front of us"....bridge was a single lane bridge with maybe 3' extra space on each side of a passing car.  About that time the mama bear seemed to turn and "say something" to the cubs.  The cubs turned around and backed further off the end of the bridge....the mama turned back to us, stood up and raised her paws above her head in the typical(?) "Let me intimidate these puny humans" fashion.  My brother-in-law didn't mention anything else about letting them "pass by" us.  We hopped down off the railing and headed to the opposite end of the bridge...bear still between us and the car.  As soon we started walking the mama bear dropped to all fours and started padding across the bridge, following behind us...soon to be followed by the cubs.  When we got to the end of the bridge it had kind of a wall on each side.  We paused for a moment and one of us said that if the mama charged at us we'd jump over the wall....we peeked over the wall and it was about 25' down to big rocks.  The mama got to the end of the bridge and we're like "WE'RE DINNER!!!!" when suddenly she peeled off into the woods on the opposite side.  The cubs, a few steps behind, followed her lead.  I swear one of those cubs tried to set us up....as it dove into the underbrush it let out a squeal...I think it was trying to get it's mama to come back and "get us"!!!!!   Durn bears.  I've got a picture of them some where when they first started crossing the bridge behind us (shot over my shoulder as we exited the bridge!!!!  :-D ).  We had to have another toast after that!!! ;)  The bad part of that entire trip was that we had to eventually get on that boat for the ride back down the inner passage...cruises are nice, if you don't have to get on the boat.

JP, that's quiet a memory you have there....treed by black bears!!!!!!!!!  Maybe they heard about you and don't like the competition doing cut outs?   :-D

Amazing JP!

Last time I went deer hunting, I was enjoying watching the deer across the field through my binoculars - and suddenly hear a SQUEEEL!.  Sure nuff - a mamma feral hog & her piglets come running across the field.  We had BBQ baby pork sandwiches that night, and got to keep hunting deer for the rest of the weekend.

Cool video JP.!!

One question... why is the video "vertical" instead of what we normally see?

Very, very cool JP. Nothing better than time in the woods.

Was your pull up rope tied off to your tree stand?

Short bear story:

My wife Gayle and I were vacationing out at Jackson Hole, WY a few Septembers ago. All week we had been seeing tons of critters; moose, elk, wolves, buffalo, eagles, everything but bears. Gayle makes repeated comments about the lack of bears and she wants to see a bear (we don't have bears in Kansas). Last day we're hiking in the Grand Teton National Park and stop to share a glass of wine on the edge of this beautiful mountain lake. So we are sitting down on this big rock right on the lake shore when we hear a noise about 50 yards behind us up the mountain slope. Gayle say's "hey look somebody's dog is over there", well the dog turns out to be a good size black bear headed right towards us down the trail that we had been following but coming from the opposite direction. Well we have absolutely no where to go stuck out on this rock, Gayle starts doing her in personalization of the scared screaming chimpanzee from the Tarzan movies, and I've got a rock in one hand and a wine cork screw in the other, not knowing what to do.

The bear apparently very used to crazy tourist doesn't even give us the time of day and just ambles on by us along the trail about 15' away. Somewhere I've got a very shaky picture of a departing bear's hind end.

Thanks for the video, can't wait for bee season.

Don

Doug, I contacted Apple to see if there was a way to convert the footage to fill the screen. They said there was no way they could think of without distorting the picture quality.

It just feels natural to me to film with the phone vertically in my hand but if I film with it held horizontally according to Apple, it will fill the screen! Duh!

The rope was in fact tied to my stand so that I could lower my gun after my hunt. This is a new stand. My old stand is easier to wrap the rope onto which I usually would do, this one I just let it hang. I figured by the time a deer was close enough to smell my hoist rope I could take it anyway but obviously didn't plan on having a bear come in and chew on it!

I'm glad this happened and will cherish these memories for the rest of my life!

Kathy, I was more enamored with the whole experience than I was scared of the bears. I just thought it was the coolest thing I had ever experienced in the woods.

I took my buddy, John, deer hunting. It was his first time bow hunting. He was sitting in a climber tree stand and heard rustling. He was looking all around trying to find out where it was coming from. His heart was pounding as the noise was getting real loud. He finally looks down and here is a large raccoon at the base of his tree shaking a vine on his tree, looking up at him like he wants John to get out of the tree.

It seems (citing both D's and swamp's examples) that bear encounters are often in conjunction with the consumption of alcoholic beverages. I'll bet iddee sees lots of bears! :-D

Me, I only get aliens :'(

We had a guy here that saw "...a little spaceship with sixteen widdle wed wights going wound and wound..."...well, don't tell anybody but he's really Elvis. ;)

As for the theory that there is a connection between alcohol and bears...absolutely, ain't you ever listened to that controversial song "God's Own Drunk" song by Jimmy Buffet???

Two words... bear sausage.  Try it if you have a chance.  I'm sure you would like it.  I've had some chance encounters with the furry critters in the past.  They are fun to watch.  If you think it's a nice view from the tree, you should try it on the ground level.  It's a much more "exciting" experience.

That's a mighty fur peace to go just to get some cold branch water.  Why not just bottle up some of that great Coneuch County branch water and make ice cubes to chill your glasses?

That's too cool.  The way he(?) was just wandering along... and how quickly a soft word or two sent him shuffling away.

Elk bow hunting puts us up in bear country every year. I've come to know that soft "WOOF" - 'Bear for "oh crap, what's that". Wish I could share our latest pic of a fresh scat pile 16" x9"x9" - half as long as my son's bow.

 Thanks for sharing!
