2 Swarms collected today
« on: March 20, 2008, 11:01:26 pm »
One was only 2' off the ground, textbook stuff. Put a sheet down, shook 'em in took some pics of the queen, still hate this camera, took some really cool close ups of the queen that came out blurry!

The other swarm was about 14' up, the queen was a feisty one. I shook them into a tupperware box I guess she wanted no part of, flew back up and had to do it again. This time I caged her and set up an enclosed cardboard box with a few small flaps cut. Placed her inside, still in the cage and left them alone while I went and gave another estimate, went back and they were all in the box. Have a great day and weekend everyone.

Annette, thanks for finding me, you didn't have to go far though, I am always right here, look out here comes the swarm king!!! Bahahahaahahaahaahah!!! Dallas just loves to give titles! I guess its better than being the king of nothing, that's what my wife says, I'm the king of nothing, Bahahaahaahaah! Now when she says, hey king of nothing, I can tell her to look at beemaster. She'd probably say something like yeah, king of bugs, such a title, we can put that on your tombstone. Here lies JP, whom was king of some bugs. Hahahaahaahah!

Cool.  Did you use a queen cage or a bug cage?  I still have my slim lines from packages.
Everyone said it couldn't be done. But he with a chuckle replied, "I won't be one to say it is so, until I give it a try."  So he buckled right in with a trace of a grin.  If he had a worry he hid it and he started to sing as he tackled that thing that couldn't be done, and he did it.  (unknown)

This is the exact cage that I used. Here is a pic of me checking the cage to see if they had released her, which they had done. http://picasaweb.google.com/pyxicephalus/March212008/photo#5180294922998555682

So instead of actually maintaining hives you just go out and collect new ones. I like it. Instead of doing laundry I will just by new clothes each time. :)

Another awesome job.

Brendhan

I actually turn down a great many. I have other memebers(PBC Beekeepers) who do cut outs. And as VP it would not be cool for me to take them all. Not only that I have bills to pay. Pesky mortgage.

I could do two a day if I wanted. Don't tell pdmattox he will come down insisting on me letting him do them. :)

Sincerely,
Brendhan

I was just remarking to Greg last night that I have never, ever seen a honeybee swarm, and neither has he.  There was a good sized apiary just around the corner from where I grew up, I'm sure Joe's bees swarmed occasionally, but I never saw one.  Hopefully I won't be seeing mine swarm!   But it'd be cool to see just one.

2 remarkable events to witness are a swarm leave the hive and a virgin queen on a mating flight. I have seen one the mating flight. I have missed a swarm by just a few moments. Next time though.

Brendhan, describe what you saw with the virgin on her maiden voyage.

What happened was you see the bees start coming out of the box and you think it is an orientation flight. Then you start noticing more bees. Bigger circles form. Then you start seeing lots of drones. I mean lots of them. The cloud moves out and back and out and back each time going a little further out. I did not see the queen mate. But what you will see are tons of drones exhausted on the ground. Slowly the bees start filtering back to the hive not all at once but gradually. Somewhere in there is a queen in need of a cigarette.

Sincerely,
Brendhan
