Title: Card board nuc box
Post by: chriso38 on August 22, 2012, 03:51:42 am
Does anyone know if we can get those cardboard 5frame nuc boxes in Australia? I reckon they would come in handy when the swarms are running hot.... simple, light , and carry one unassembled in your car for emergency's.....  :)

Import them.  Or see if you can get waxed cardboard down there to cut out to make your own nucs.  I bet there are some forum members that could print out the dimensions of the cardboard nucs for you.   It should not be too hard and they are just temporary.

I'd love to get hold of foam boxes that are the perfect size for a five frame nuc!

I saw them recently at Hornsby Bee Supplies in Sydney. Also I think they are available through the Urban Beekeeping Company in Sydney.

I've seen coreflute nucs at a field day that look the business. I would bet they would be more durable than cardboard and they are obviously available, I just can't remember where from :?

I have a box of these: http://www.theurbanbeehive.com.au/Products.cfm (http://www.theurbanbeehive.com.au/Products.cfm)

They are good for going and collecting a swarm etc. But if you leave them in your yard for more than a day you'll create a great home for shb and ants.

That's the ones! Just the ticket to keep in the car for swarms I would think.

According to their Facebook page, $15.00 each, they come in boxes of 10 but I believe they sell singles.

I don't know what they are new. I got mine from someone that didn't want them.

The only problem I see with that idea is the box looks a little flimsy.  Looks like the bees could easily get loose.  Thousands of bee loose in 1500kg of metal flying down the road at 60km/h may be a prescription for a problem. :)

You may already do this, but I carry a head net with me during swarm season just in case.  I wear it if a get lucky.

Duct tape is a beekeepers best friend and can fix most problems with leaking bees  ;)
