My new swarm hive
« on: September 22, 2019, 09:16:38 am »
Was openend yesterday- the deep had 20 bees on it.
I removed it.
The brood box had 2 full frames of brood 1/4 of 1 frame with drone cells. Lots of nectar and honey surrounding the brood
I found
5 Q cells 2 open 3 closed - I pinched the 2 biggest QC. I left the smallest QC.
What may be happening?

Salty if all the bees were gone except 20, I do not know, especially with all the resources that you have. Maybe someone with more experience will chime in.

To be clear, that swarm was so healthy in the brood box, I threw a super on . After finding only a handful 2 weeks later , I removed the super.
That?s fine
My question is the brood box. 5 QC?s and drone brood has me stumped. They don?t look like swarm cells.
The remaining bees at the lady?s home are setting up shop again. I don?t think I missed the queen but these girls are making them
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

Salty,
The bees probably swarmed again.
Why did you only leave the smallest queen cell. With only 3 queen cells, I would leave all three. If I were going to remove any, it would be the smallest. With only a few bees,
They are not going to swarm.

Thanks Jim
Like I said , the bb is bustling with activity. What makes you think no swarming?

Maybe I am mistaken but didn?t you say there are only a few bees left in this hive?

Salty, good morning to you Sir.

In your first text you stated 20 bees ON the box.  To clear up some confusion;

How many frames of bees in the hive?  Are the frames full of bees?
What is the hive configuration?  One deep, one deep and shallow etc.

When I ask how many frames of bees, no need to pull frames, removed the lid and count how many frames are filled with bees looking at you. BTW when I count 8 frames full of bees on a ten frame I use 80% as numerical value, and say the hive is 80% full.

Fall is here, enjoy everybody.

I have been around bees a long time, since birth.  I am a hobbyist so my answers often reflect this fact.  I concentrate on genetics, raise my own queens by wet graft, nicot, with natural or II breeding.  I do not sell queens, I will give queens  for free but no shipping.

This is the healthy swarm I brought home and they did great when I added 2 frames of brood, so I added a super 10 frame - the super was near empty when I checked so I removed it. The 10 frame BROOD BOX is doing great 60-70 percent of a 10 frame bb but has those drones and queens

@ Salty
''The remaining bees at the lady?s home are setting up shop again. I don?t think I missed the queen but these girls are making them.''

Salty, how far from your apiary is the cut out job?  The reason I ask is; In the case that you did actually accidently leave the queen and you are within two miles of the job, some of the workers may be making their way back, and they will set up shop again if time and weather is permitted. This may explain all the other conditions that you have described and be the missing piece of the puzzle.

Mr. Ben, Er uh Phil:

I think you nailed this one, explains everything, queen cells and all.  Agree with Phil.

Salty, go get the queen..... keep us informed.

Funny, as I drive the road it?s 5 miles , if you flew , it?s 3 at the most lol.
Last question - south Florida warm until December
- When do I take the supers off to concentrate on brood box only and main hive survival?
