Suspending my Bee keeping
« on: February 27, 2018, 05:53:49 pm »
There is a strong possibility that I will be making a big move soon to far North Queensland and I will not be in a position to take my hives numbering 20 with me.
If the move comes off I will have to move pretty quickly. My gear ranges from new to good used condition with mostly plastic frames, I am wondering if there is any lurkers out there in the Dubbo area who are at all interested in my hives if I need to sell them. Before I advertise them elsewhere................

Maaate, one word, Gumtree.
And be ready for the Wank Brigade... you should have no problem
unloading at good value as it is said working colonys are scarce
on the ground.

Sooo... welcome to FNQ, you'd be an asset from what I have read.
Your choice... buuut I would be packing up at least two boxes of drawn
and freighting them - or better yet there is a fella advertising on GT
offering a pet transfer service to Cairns at least.
You'll get bees here no worries, they are in the trees all over.
And with our best times not far off they will build quickly on drawn.

Lucks to youse and yorn.

Yeah thanks for the advice Bill and kind words,my Bee's are working well and are strong. I will look at that Pet transfer stuff that you mentioned and the Cairns area is where I hope to be heading fingers crossed.
I think I'll sell them at this point and after I am established I might start up again.
It difficult to put a price on the Hives........there all double 8 frame boxes. I have seen some ridiculous prices on Gumtree.,and like you mentioned I would make them an attractive deal.
I was thinking in the $200 to $300 area per hive.

Cheers
Steve

Andrew,
A single 10 frame is going for $250 here and that is a good price. I think you have a higher demand for good hives over there.

Mate at $200 a hive I'm tempted to drive down but the 11 hour trip might not go down well with the girls!

All excellent possies between Mount Molloy and Ravenswood west of
Kuranda, and some good woodlands seasonal spots around Rex Range
on the coast. Avoid the mangrove where possible.
Ideally a commercial b'keep or one aspiring to stepup to commercial
would be the least work and maybe best deal as a joblot, just watch
the bartering in holding your ground. Equipment in good nick loaded
with bees is worth good money, Steve.
Here is one link which if nothing else might tell you the keywords
to use in advertising.
http://www.aussieapiaristsonline.net/bees-for-sale-queensland.html

If you have your own genetic line, push it. If not show a brief description
of your bee's behaviour.
I'll stay out of pricing just to say I can get better than 300 for 30L, allbeit
I have a unique product. I have had folks through the yard that have paid
700 for brood plus a super(undrawn)... and then there are the few FlowHive
folk who did pay better than 1200 by the time bees actually began working
honey frames.
On those southern tablelands you should do okay, they'll be knocking your
door down..,! :-))

Migrating beeks commonly take longer trips than that in U.S, and I'm sure in Oz.  The bees will be fine with proper care.  Strap them down securely and don't have an accident.  They will arrive safe and sound, though perhaps a bit annoyed.  But they will settle down and get back to work very quickly.
Winter is coming.

I can't say I hate the government, but I am proudly distrustful of them.

Hi Steve
Talked to the boss and she said it was fine to drive down. Let me know if you do want to sell. I'll take all 20.

One point to consider is what kind of bees are there in the new location after the move.  Starting over is not that easy since you don't know what the bee environment is like there.  Sometime it is not that easy to reestablish a colony with the bees that you like.  What if you can save one or 2 small 3-5 frames nuc hives for the expansion at the new location once you have settled down.  This way you don't have to spend more time hunting down for bees since you already have the drawn comb packed away.   Save the good genetics!

Been thinking this over Steve to offer those bees represent a serious amount
of time/love/labour, and so I put is it possible to put them on agistment
somewhere on the plains? I have done the Hunter to Charters Towers in around
20hours towing a tandem loaded with double stacked boxes easy, Cairns is
another 7hours tops. So for a grand in fuel and trailer hire???
Well worth considering setting yourself up in FNQ to then take a drive come
July..no?
@beepro prompted the line...
We could do with the genetics up here in the scrub...beetlefree bees that is :-))

Yeah Bill,I have thought about the agistment thing...... at this time I am thinking out loud and I appreciate the input. If I make the move I will be living in a residential  area ewwww for the first time in many years.
Its all starting to do my head in a little I even had a bloke out of the Blue offer to buy my old 4WD which I use as a Beekeeping truck. Which surprised the hell out of me.

Too many unknowns atm for sure but I think moving the girls on would be the best thing for them.

The jury is still out on all fronts

Cheers

Suburbia is what turns over the dollar Steve, someone has to live innit..heh ;-)
Pretty safe to say our coastal 'burbs arent suited for EHB..when I moved up here from the Towers l stayed in places where bylaws forbade a clothesline in the backyard - "not a good look" decreed the powers that be. Cairns is a fair drive for me but I am way better off
away from it. If you're looking at there - or coastal within 30km - then I'd offer the caution you post is sound  thinking.  You'll find residential rural where that  investment stacks up for you. Buuut go west some and  it all changes :-))

You have my sympathy. Have lived in the country almost all my life, even when we lived in Sydney we backed on to a National Park and our street had 4 houses in it so it didn't "feel" like the burbs. Now we are back on 10 acres and no close neighbours.....heaven! Huge move for you I hope it all works out well for you. Sometimes these things work out really well. I swapped countries had to leave friends, the girls, my race car, and everything else in my life apart from what I could put in a suitcase, hard at the time but it has all worked out in the end.

Mate those hair dryers never lasted, something far more durable a Datsun 1600 with a fully ported and polished 180B with twin 45 Delortos. Went like....well you know. Managed to win 2 Championships in her. Ah those were the days. Now I have to get my thrills in the silly seat co driving in various rallies when I can time them in the Nelson area when I am over there. Mate has  Escort with Honda 2000 in it, redlines 8000. He also knows how to peddle it wins just about everything in the 2 wheel category and will not use pace notes! Old school.

I had to look up agistment, since it's not a word used much in the states.  Prompts me to ask if Australia still uses the Torrens system for real property.
