Title: beehive scale
Post by: tbelo on February 26, 2017, 09:13:51 am
Why bother constructing your own sms beehive scale and not just buy a reliable and cheap one like the one from <link removed> from only 210 euros ?

Well that is about $233 US + the $32 to ship, I don't know if I consider that cheap.
If you haul enough 50 lb grain bags and some 75 lb hay bales you get a real good feel for how much something weighs.

Not for nothing but you can weigh your hives with a 5 dollar bathroom scale from Walmart and a two by four.

The point of wifi or Bluetooth connected scales are not just to weigh the hive but weight it at regular intervals like every hour and report that info to you.

I presume the point of sms scales is that you can get reports from a remotely located hive so use that info when scheduling and planning your hive visit.

I have a 90 degree arm, with a hand winch, on my golf cart that I use to lift Deer and hogs but it makes a perfect "weigh" to weigh hives.  I use a heavy ratchet strap around the complete hive, and just hook the scale on the lift arm into the strap that is around the hives. The $35 scale from Amazon, good for 750 pounds, hangs on the winch hook.  If I positioned the cart right the hive is hardly moved while I weigh
