Well, BlueBee, what do you think I'd think about that?   Saban is probably one of the best coaches in the country if not the best.  Alabama was very fortunate to hire him and he's done a fine job of recruiting and coaching and naturally I hope he stays at Bama.   He energizes the kids and knows football as art and science.  I certainly can't speak badly of him like so many people do (mainly because they're sore losers).  Whether he goes or not I don't know...I'll talk to a friend of mind next week and see if he's heard anything.  If Saban moves on Alabama will probably hit a few bumps for a couple of years getting settled in with a new coach but Tide will roll on.  Naturally, when Bama wins the 2013 BCS National Championship Title it would be a good exit point for Saban, whether he takes it we will have to wait and see.

But, thank you for inquiring, BlueBee, being as this gives me the opportunity to say...

Beware good ole Saban has a LONG history of publicly saying one thing and then doing just the opposite days later.  I certainly can’t blame him for wanting to move ahead in his profession.  It’s just his dishonesty to the people and players around him which I find distasteful.  Then again maybe my standards are kind of old fashioned.  I guess I’m accustomed to people who had great character like Bo Schembechler.

Did you ever do a search on Nick Saban and Michigan State;  like Nick Saban MSU?
Heck, I'm about as anti Spartan as they come, but even I had to feel for the Spartans on that one.

Here's an interesting Readers Digest condensed version... http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1017936/index.htm  Interesting story.  I was told that Saban's wife makes more money than he does...maybe he's just trying to keep up with her in chasing the $$$.

Old fashioned standards are good, the new ones are the ones that I worry about and that make me raise an eyebrow.

Every school (well, most of 'em) have there ups and downs...their top of the piles and their bottom of the heaps.  Saban may be a money chaser but I'll take what we can get out of him while we're paying him...when he's gone he's gone.  He could stay at Alabama and possibly become a legend, but whether he goes or stays...he'll never beat a bear in a wrestling match.

I'll agree with that :)

I recall reading a piece in the local paper about Saban leaving Michigan State years ago.  It was kind of humorous to read, but at last I can’t seem to find it.  That was some 12 years ago.  I recall that good ole boy Saban took off for LSU in a private jet and when he got to Baton Rouge, he ordered the Jet to go back to East Lansing to pick up his assistant coaches to come work for him down there.  When the Jet got back to Baton Rouge, there was nobody on board!  Seems all the back stabbing and lying didn’t gain him much loyalty in the end.

Here’s a piece from one of his former players:  http://espn.go.com/blog/bigten/post/_/id/222/plaxico-is-not-a-big-nick-saban-fan

I heard he had a less than acrimonious departure from LSU too; when he went to Miami.  However I didn’t follow the details.  Going to the Dolphins was about as much of a career killer as going to the Detroit Lions.  That made no sense to me.  Some institutions can’t be turned around no matter what!

Nick Saban (or more appropriately the people he’s hired) has been very successful at the college level and failed at the pro level.  Why on earth he would want to go back to the Pros is a bit beyond me.

I agree that his "pro days" are not something that he wants glistening no his resume...some folks never learn, though.  I think that if he could become a "legend" that he would, but chasing the dollar has probably taken that opportunity away from him.  But, he still has time to make a broad stroke on the canvas of college football...*if* he stuck with a school.  He's gotta have a team to be remembered with...otherwise he's just "here today...gone tomorrow" and folks will mention his name in passing.

And don't think for a minute that if he screws Alabama that those pictures of his tanned mug won't be lining the troughs of many a bathroom.   A coach *earns* loyalty and respect at Alabama...hopefully Saban will do that, if he doesn't well then...MSU and Bama will have something in common in regards to fuzzy feelings to an ex-coach. ;)

But, like I said...for now I'll take the results we're getting.  And, if he gets over on us...you'll hear from me. ;)  For now I just home he can get the secondary organized and stronger and that both lines (def/off) will show up in a big way against ND.

BTW, good empty plane story.  :-D

he will stay in Alabama. He is using this for a pay raise.

Saban likes total control. Its hard to tell a player making 10X what he makes what to do thats why he left the Dolphins. He didn't have the control of the players.
Had he known now how it would be before going to Miami my bet would be he would still be with LSU.

He stays in Alabama with a pay increase.

As for the deciept in leaving LSU yes there was a bunch he left a press conference saying he was staying at LSU. Then left for the airport. The local news followed him and filmed him getting on the Dolphins plane. Never to return

That is funny!  I didn’t follow his exit from LSU, but I do remember reading his “reasons” for wanting to go back to the college game!  It sounded like complete BS to me at the time, but I will admit there was some logic in his arguments.  At the time I thought it was just a bunch of excuses for why the Dolphins job turned into such a disaster.

What you say about him wanting to be in total control is something I also believe.  I also agree with Swamp that he could turn into a legend in the college game IF he stays put.  My guess is his ego is still too big for the college game and he’ll try to NFL as least one more time.

For all his flaws (as I see them), I can’t deny he has been very successful at winning.  If it were me, I would stay put at Bama.  Relax and enjoy the success and money while you’re still upright!

Nick Saban is not going back to the NFL, he would have to take a pay cut for C-Sakes.  They said the same thing about the Bear going to the Naive Football League to coach the Dolphins, but Bryant stayed on and retired from Alabama.

Here is all Saban has to say, "Rammer Jammer, Yellowhammer, give 'em hell, Alabama!"

I wonder if the Tide gives Michigan another Timex Licking like the one they dished out @ Dallas this year, if the Wolverines will keep ticking or just take their ball and go home like USC did!!!  Just watching the game made me feel sorry for Blue.

If that Michigan team was an # 8 club with a Heisman Trophy candidate to boot, .... well here is the web sight Sabin used to train his team for the Michigan game.

You SEC fans will like this.  The Rose Bowl quit offering the best teams in America invitations to play in the Rose Bowl after the 1946 Timex Licking the Crimson Tide gave USC.

Fight on! Fight on! Fight on, men!
Remember the Rose Bowl, we'll win then.
Go, roll to vict'ry! Hit your stride!
You're Dixie's football pride, Crimson Tide!

[url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1946_Rose_Bowl]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1946_Rose_Bowl

After 1946 the Pac 12 and the Big[?] 10 took their foot balls and went home in shame.  Never again to host two teams that had EARNED a trip to the Rose Bowl.

The joke was, "Where is the capital of California?"  The punch line was, "All of California's capital is now in Tuscaloosa, it went back to Alabama riding high on the Crimson Tide!"

By the way this was only 4 months after the end of WWII and all the Tide's players were 4F's, physically unfit for the draft or service in the military.

Kingbee, we didn’t win the battle on the football field, but it’s safe to say the Wolverines are still the “leaders and best”.  X:X

It wasn’t a great year for the Wolverines on the football field, but at least they were competitive in most games (sans Alabama).  That is a whole lot better than we had with Rich Rod as coach.  With Denard Robinson graduating this year, we should finally be able to get back to traditional Michigan pro style football again.

With the minimum wage in the NFL, Denard should make more than most of us will make a in a life time.  And ya’ll are against unions :?  Anyways.....I suspect his career in the NFL will be short.  I hope he actually spent some time in Ann Arbor earning that degree they’re going to give him.  They don’t just hand those out to most kids.

<snip>
"Leaders and best"???...how about that 2013 Outback Bowl with South Carolina yesterday?  Even with the refs giving them a big, free 1st down they couldn't win.  After that blatant mis-call by the referees, I liked the next play from scrimmage so much I rewound the dvr and recorded it and all the replays.  :lau:

For anyone who missed it...  Michigan was short on a first down by *several* inches (easily seen on the television) but the referees gave it too them anyhow....SC protested and Spurrier challenged the spot.  The refs still gave it to Michigan.  On the very next play SC's #7 Clowney  "corrected" the situation.      The Gamecocks went on to win the game. :yippiechick:

Here's a youtube video of that "next play"  :-D...  Clowney's Huge Hit knocks helmet off and ball out in Outback Bowl!!!

Enjoy, BlueBee, I know you'll want to play it over and over.<grin>

Swamp, I enjoy watching a good clean football game, not WWF, nor unnecessary roughness that causes some young kids brain to bounce back and forth like a yo-yo.  Simple physics tells you that results in permanent damage.

I watched most of the game and hats off to the Gamecocks.  They were tenacious and played well enough to win.  I really thought Michigan was going to stop them on that last series, but it was not to be.  Apart from the unnecessary brutality and…yes… that ridiculous 4th down conversion call, it was a pretty good game.

LOL.  I’ll have to admit, I’ve NEVER seen anything as blatantly miscalled as that 4th down conversion.    That was truly a call that will live in infamy.  Was the official blind or what?  That was just surreal.

I think Smith's biggest injury from that hit was to his pride...he seemed none the worse for it afterwards.  If Clowney had hit him in the head Smith would've stayed down and flags would've decorated Clowney and SC would have lost that fumble recovery.  He took a good lick, but, in my opinion, the helmet flying was mostly a "wardrobe malfunction"....the equipment manager needs to check some chin strap snaps.

"Unnecessary brutality"?...it's called football.  Clowney did his job...he stopped ball advancement and took the ball away, that is what he is supposed to do.  I guess now we need to ban college football, huh?

Yeah, what a call on that 1st down call, eh.

I'll agree that 4th down call was pretty bad (from where I was sitting).  But one thing that has annoyed me this year is coaches running onto the field of play to complain.  I didn't think that was acceptable, and in my mind (small as it is), should be a misconduct penalty anytime a coach does!

UM gave up one too many big plays.  I was mostly disappointed that they couldn't get Spurrier to throw his visor.  If whining were an artform, he would be Picasso.  I'll bet he cried when his Alma Mater lost last night.  :cheer: to Louisville.

And... while my second favorite team has always been any team playing against Notre Dame, as if I needed more reasons, look-up Lizzy Seeberg.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/she-the-people/wp/2012/12/04/why-i-wont-be-cheering-for-old-notre-dame/

And, IMO, no team should ever have a convicted felon on the field.  Ever!  Particularly not UM.  I know the charges can be expunged when he fulfills his probation, but until then, he shouldn't be on the field.  Somewhere Bo is not smiling.

I guess I missed the part about a convinced felon on the field!   Who what that Sundog?  I recall hearing Denard was arrested for driving on a suspended license, but who’s got a felony?  I agree with you, whoever that was should not be playing.  That’s the kind of thing we expect from OSU, not the Wolverines!

I agree with you (Sundog) that UofM gave up too many big plays.  I was guessing they were trying to blitz the Gamecocks to rattle their QB.  That seems to be a very effective strategy when employed against UofM (unfortunately), so maybe they thought they would try it to.  Obviously it didn’t work in this case.

I can remember so many games where Rich Rod would never blitz and the opposing QB had all day to pick apart UofM’s weak secondary.  I would rather gamble with some blitz’s than relive Rich Rods crazy idea of an iron curtain secondary.

To be honest, I really hope we’ll have a much better team next year when all of Rich Rods influences are finally gone.

Defensive End Frank Clark.  Not a terrible offense, but a felony none the less.  A felony should be a line in stone at the NCAA level!

"...University Of Michigan's Fight Song- Hail To The Victors!"

Why thankee Blue, That be right nice of the Wolverines to acknowledge the winner of the season opener in their fight song like that. :-D

Oh, by the way, has UM learned all they needed to learn about football?

The reason I asked is that the Wolverines aren't playing the Tide in 2013.  ;)

And what's with MU having two bye weeks next season? Is Michigan's extra bye week for court appearances, probation hearings, or what?  :police:  :-D

... Saban may be a money chaser but... He could stay at Alabama and... become a legend...

The biggest money chaser to ever coach at Bama was none other than Paul 'Bear' Bryant.  The Bear also had a thing about control.

Bryant's first NCAA head coaching job was at the University of Marryland.  He left after only one year when the Marryland Athletic Director reinstated a player who Bryant had suspended.

Next Bryant went to the University of Kentucky.  In 1950 Kentucky won SEC Championships in football under Paul Bryant and in basketball under Adolph Rupp.  The alumni association  gave Paul Bryant an engraved wrist watch as a token of their appreciation.  However they gave Adolph Rupp a new Cadillac.  The discrepancy was not lost on the Bear.  As soon as his contract was up he went to Texas A&M.  For a lousy 5 or 6K Kentucky lost a football legand.

As I recall, the salaries of the college coaches didn’t really start to go into the Stratosphere until the 1990s.  If Bear Retired in 1982, I would bet his salary at the time was on the order of 200K.  A lot of money back then, but still less than 10x a middle class income.  Nowday’s what does Saban make?  5.6 million is what I found.  Over 100x a middle class income.  How much money does Saban think he needs anyways?

I saw on Wikipedia that the Bear won a lawsuit back in 1962 for 3 million dollars!  Now that was a lot of money back then.

Pretty funny.  Where did Alabama come up with that fight song?  Sounds like something from a Barnum and Bailey event.

Or how's bout this, The Crimson Tide 41 Michigan 16.
Noter Dame 13 Michigan 6.
the Tide's game against Michigan was at a neutral field, the Irish's game was @ home.

But in true sporting fashion, during the second half the Tide dressed out and played three small cheerleaders and the whole clarinet section.

Noter Dame's bowl eligible opponents this season finished 3 out of 9 or 3W-6L
Bama's bowl eligible opponents finished 3W 4L.

Paul (Bear) Bryant today signed a 10-year contract as head football coach and athletic director at the University of Alabama, bringing to an end rumors and speculation that have been running the gossip gamut since midseason of 1956.

No salary terms were revealed, but the consensus is that Bryant is to receive $17,500 yearly.

"We have secured in our way of thinking the best football coach in the country," said Dr. Frank Rose, president-elect at Alabama.

 ”—
Tuscaloosa News (Dec. 3rd 1957): Bryant Signs 10-Year Pact

Bryant always kept his salary one dollar less than the university president's.

But he made his real dough pitching Coca-Cola and Golden Flake tater chips.

THE ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE - 2013 BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
« Reply #35 on: January 08, 2013, 12:56:27 am »
Let the Swanee Tiger scratch; Let the Yellow Jacket sting;
Let the Georgia Bulldog bite; Alabama still is right;
And whether win or lose we smile, for that's Bama's fighting style:
You're Dixie's football pride, Crimson Tide!
Yea, Alabama! Drown 'em Tide!
Every Bama Man's behind you, hit your stride!
Go teach the Bulldogs to behave!
Send the Yellow Jackets to a Watery Grave!
And if a man starts to weaken, that's his shame:
For Bama's pluck and grit have writ her name in Crimson Flame.
Fight on! Fight on! Fight on, men!
Remember the Rose Bowl, we'll win then.
Go, roll to vict'ry! Hit your stride!
You're Dixie's football pride, Crimson Tide!

Blue, wh-che-think-bout-that-their-fight-song now?  :?

But hold your head up high buddy, #8 Michigan played Bama about as well as #1 ND did.

On, did any of you other people see the little short person in crimson and white come out with the team on Bama's side of the field last night?

Looked to me like the Leprechauns even knew what was in store for the Irish.  :-D

notre dame had no business being ranked #1 that was wishful thinking from the media. you can want something to be so bad but in the end it will not change the outcome

long live the SEC! i do not see a change in the BCS champions SEC will continue to dominate

just wait till the playoffs start and we have 3 of the 4 teams from the SEC or even all 4

I agree with Keith, Notre Dame had no business being ranked #1.  OSU was really the #1 team out there this year.  I still hope a playoff system is in the future.  It would be a fairer way of determining who’s number one (if that is important) and would result in better football games to watch (if that is important).  I would much rather watch an all SEC playoff (if that’s what it comes to) than the lopsided BCS championship games we’ve had to endure.
