I like Gaim.  It's an opensource instant messaging program like AOL AIM without the bloatware and security issues.  Download it and give it a try.

I'll third it for GAIM.    It's the only thing I'll use at work, even though they try to block only the supported clients.  Trillian is also good, but a little heavier than I need.  GAIM does everything I need and is good at it and very stable.   I'd highly advise to stay away for windows messenger, like everything else microsoft,  it's the epitome of bloatware.

As others have said, it's M$ bloatware.  I'm allergic to M$, I try to only use Windows, everything else is from someone else.  Someday I won't be using Windows, either, but that's another learning curve......
