Another new guy but this time in Japan
« on: December 30, 2016, 10:08:32 am »
Howdy
, I'm really happy to find this site.
My grandfather use to have bees and as a kid I would love watching him handle the bees.

He would put his around me and take me to the front of the hives and tell me what was happening and show me the different types of bees.

Then driving home he would give me some comb to eat and chew on.

That was in Australia a long time ago.
Now living in Japan, I have 10 acres of farm land full of green tea, 500"
mandarin trees, a bamboo farm and a few acres of just wild natural bushland.

I was cleaning some bamboo to make it easy to get around and I turned around and was looking at all these trees and other farms and yet I have never seen a bee or bee hive anywhere.

So now while I have land, spare time and a crazy desire to grow my own hives and to share the same things with my grandkids that mine did, I have decided to try.

I look forward to your comments and advice as I post stories and photos of my dream. Farm

Thanks
beepan

Be sure to check on the regulations regarding something like that in Japan.

I checked and no problems in that sense but the problem is being accepted into a bee organization that is closed to non Japanese as they want to protect their investments and keep it all ran by Japanese

Yes those are a problem
I have been told to use a queen excluder on the bottom of the lower box or use queen excluder mesh across the entrance

But how often does the queen leave a hive?

The queen only leaves when she mates and when she swarms. 1/4 inch mesh wire will let her through and keep the hornets out.

Thanks iddee !
I'm going to put some traps around as well but keeping them out of the hive door is paramount

Have a wonderful new year

You can buy a 50,000 dollar car, or a 15,000 dollar car. Either will get you where you want to go.

I'll use wire.
