Title: Frames and Frame Assembly Videos
Post by: Robo on March 13, 2009, 12:19:03 am
I've decided to put together a series of short videos on frames and frame assembly to help new beekeepers better understand the options and assembly methods.

The first clip is an overview of frames  -> https://youtu.be/at24aXV5OO0

Awesome Rob - both the Frame and Queen marking. I liked the HQ options at youtube these days, as soon as I find what is wrong with my usb/software issue from camera to PC I'll be back at Beemaster Studios myself :)

Great Work!

Excellent.  It is often hard to explain them with text,  but the video makes it clearer.

Rob,

Thank you so much.  I really enjoyed these they are great.  I would love to see how to put the wax in the frame for comb honey, if you do another.  I am sure all who watch these learned something.

Rob, very nice video's, I even learned some thing from these (perma comb and supercell parts) plus totally agree on the Duragilt part, but the main thing I want to learn is where did you get that shirt in the last video????  looks like you just come from the 60's  :-D :-P ,,
cant wait to see the sequels, very nice Job, like said above you should charge for a video like this, nobody else even makes them like what you covered, just something for you to think about.....

Robo, you should do one also on the frame I think is the easiest and best for wood and wax people, the new Kelly frame, it is so easy to install the wax without having to use a wedge.

I also just made the frame jig yesterday, you were so right, I had one of them convaluted spring wing dings. They are a pain compared to the one you have, took me all of an hour to make it. Fast, easy and no hassle to use. Right on! Thanks!!!

Went to Harbor Freight yesterday and bought an air stapler and a box of 5000 staples.  My son and I whipped out 50 brood frames in no time today.  No more nails here...LOL.  My wife says I will have more time for the recliner now...LMAO.  I'm thinking -- wonder what I can build now...

Frame jig... Honestly havent used one...    I usually glue/nail make sure they are flat, stand them up and use a square to make sure they are straight and drop them in the frame rack on the wall...

   (http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a317/KnitePrince/015.jpg) (http://s14.photobucket.com/user/KnitePrince/media/015.jpg.html)

The bar on the right is cut from a 2x 10  the next bar and the one beside it are after trimming it down to one inch giving me the top bar and bottom bar.   Next is after shaving the ends to fit the side plates.. then after shaving the ends to the right depth and cutting them to a 45.. all parts ready to assemble the frame on the left.
The 2x piece was shaved in the table saw, then both ends routered, and cut to width to make the side plates again using the table saw..  The hardest part is shaving the top bars so they fit correctly.. the side plates can be made FAST and a lot of them, the top bars take time, but work well and add a lot of strength...    Your post has me thinking about making a jig so I can nail up 20 or so of these at a time rather than doing them one at a time. Would certainly speed the process!!!

I just got 300 frames so I'm going to make the assembly jig.  Seems worth the time.

Thanks for the videos and also for the plans which makes things quite a bit easier for me.  I've printed them off and as soon as I get a good chance I'll work on getting ready for Spring bees!

Hi Robbo,
Great videos, have I missed something on the frame jig? I did not find the thickness of the timber when I downloaded the specs. of the jig.

I have a stupid question, Why is this post still a sticky post if the links are no longer working or have been updated? I was hoping to see how you made your jig.

Just for fun I built this frame building fixture.
Because there is too much variation in the milling of the parts even when you buy from the same supplier things wouldn't line up from batch to batch to make the assemble glitch free.  Anyway I had fun building it.

Of all the different Jig assemblies. This is the first one that I have seen that. Works off of the outside of the frame. All the other ones I have seen that work well measure off the inside of the frame. Just maybe something you think about. Hope you have a great day.

If you'd like something a little low Tech. Which most Woodworkers can make. This is a jig I would recommend.

Of all the different Jig assemblies. This is the first one that I have seen that. Works off of the outside of the frame.

Look at it again Jim, the stop blocks (gauging) are on the inside of the end bars.  That was not a issue.  The issue was the rabbit in both the top and the bottom of the end bars was not centered the same between lots.  For hand assembly this doesn't matter but when you automate something you have to control the gauging.  In other words every lot must be the same and there is no reason it can't be.  It doesn't cost the supplier any more to make it the same it is just that it doesn't matter to hand assemble so they don't bother.
A large manufacture of frames could take this concept and totally automate it if they had the volume to support the cost of automation.
All I did is cobble up a prototype out of wood.  The concept is sound.

Yes, it's a brilliantly simple method.  I made that jig woodwork in two pieces: one being a side and two ends; the other being just one side.  Held together with shock-cord as per video. If you make the ends very slightly under-size, then you can insert shims to cater for (pretty-much unavoidable) variations between manufacturers.  Then, removing those shims makes completed frame extraction so much easier.

A great method.
