Hello from Kenya
« on: November 03, 2017, 08:49:36 am »
Hi all,

Inherited 30 hives recently (4 months ago) when moving to Kenya. Half of them populated.
Been reading abour beekeeping and really got interested.
Got my suit 3 weeks ago and been checking some hives.
Any advise on working with African bees or any general advise on a newbie?

Thanks.

Welcome to Beemaster.

I strongly recommend you work with someone who knows how deal with Africanized Bees before you try to inspect your hives.

When you do start, smoke your hives 10 minutes and 30 seconds before you go in the hives.
Keep your hives separated from each other. Never use a pallet with multiple hives. If the hives are too close like we keep our European bees, one hive getting agitated can cascade to other hives that are near it.
Get a good suit and never work them without full protection, head to toe.
Park your car away from the hives but not to far. Do not lock your doors and make sure your windows are up/closed.

Also, never jar or bang on the hives or their platform. This really gets
them mean.
