Migratory beekeeping
« on: July 18, 2017, 02:04:25 pm »
I'm writing a paper on the history of migratory beekeeping and I was hoping to get some input from anyone who is already moving their bees, whether it's for nectar flow or pollination. (I'm getting my master's in applied entomology and the class is on the history of beekeeping) My basic questions are:
Why do you need to move your bees? Is it for financial success or colony survival?
Why did you start/How did you start migratory beekeeping?
Do you have to manage your bees differently when you move them around?
Thank you!!

G'day.
Long retired from MBK, startup was in pollination.
Colony management required tweaking to suit
that purpose with apiary management holding its own
elements of supervision.
Outfit ran to around  250+/- colonies, at the lower end
of that industry in terms of numbers.

Cheers.

There is an excellent documentary titled "More Than Honey" by Markus Imhoof.  This DVD covers migratory bee keeping with the six figure income for the bee keepers.

Applied Entomologist to be.  Good for you, our bees need experts.  May you be richly blessed with knowledge you seek.
