gear pump
« on: March 02, 2010, 08:36:23 am »
I picked up a kelly gear pump without a motor this weekend.  It is mounted on a heavy steel base plate.   Can anyone tell me what RPM I need to shoot for.  I see Kelly uses 1/2 or 3/4 HP but I dont know if they are 1750's or 3450RPM motors

I don't know this for sure but I would think it would depend on your pulley size.  In other other word your drive ratios.  The smaller the pulley on the motor the slower it will turn the pump.  I think? :-D

If you look in the Mann Lake ltd. catalogue on page 90 there pictures of pumps and the motors they use 1750 rpm. motors. The rpms are reduced  by pulley size for each specific type pump.

Thanks for the responses but this is not what I'm looking for.   The pump has a 9"pulley and the motor pulley is 11/2.    9 X 3.14= 28.26     1.5 X 3.14= 4.71
   28.26 div by 4.71= 6     1750RPM div by 6=291RPM @ the pump
   3450RPM div by 6= 575RPM @ the pump

I understand the math but my question is what RPM do I need

Get the 1750 rpm, 3/4 hp motor. I've never seen a honey pump that uses a higher speed. Try a pump shop for rebuilt motors.

If any one is interested I found the answer to my question.   Optimal RPM at the pump is 300.   This can be done with motor speed and pulleys or deduction gears

what you need to remember is the amount of HP it will take to pump honey
HP=torque x RPM- RDY-B
