Title: Large brood chamber
Post by: doak on May 21, 2007, 04:03:19 pm
Say if I wanted to build a large bottom brood chamberI want it be long enough to take 3 eight frame supers. How long does it need to be?
I know I can measure 3,  8 frame supers, thats what I'll do when time comes.
Just wondering if anyone else had tried this.

That way you could have 6 supers on at once and it would be only 3 boxes high.

I'm just taking a guess here, but you want a box to put 24 frames in right?

If your standard frame is 1 3/8 inches wide then you will need a space a minimum of 33 inches, if my math was right. Than would be a tight fit so probably 33 1/2 inches. That is inside measurement.

Don't  forget, if you put 3,  8 frame supers on, you will have 2 sets of 2 boards on the supers that will be sitting over 1 and 1/2 frames each.
The 2 sideboards boards on the middle super and the 1 board on the inside of each of your two outside supers. Each super being a full (4) sided box.
Sit 3 eight frame supers side by side touching one another.

At any rate I'm going to make me one. See how it works.

I see. Didn't quite have it clear in my head. So yes just sit three supers side by side and measure. Probably be 48 3/4 inches outside and 47 1/4 inside. That should hold 37 standard frames.

OH SHOOT!!! I was measuring ten frame box. And only figured 1 1/4 wide frames. (Other things on my mind.)

I'll let every one know how it turns out, in about a month.

I have several medium depth ones that are three ten frame boxes long (48 3/4"), several deep ones that are two ten frame boxes long (32 1/2") and one that is two eight frame boxes long (27 1/2").  I have two deeps that are 12 frame (19 7/8" long) and one Dadant deep that is a double wide (32 1/2").

If you buy your boxes from Brushy Mt or Miller Bee Supply it will be 41 1/4" long.  If you buy them from Mann Lake or Betterbee it will be 42" long.

Long hives are quite nice to work (no lifting).

I started a double deep (32 1/2) this year. If it goes well, I will be building more for next year.
