Title: Advice on observation hive, what brand to purchase??
Post by: Van, Arkansas, USA on August 11, 2017, 05:22:08 pm
After reading the text by Jim (sawdustmaker) quoted below on another thread, I have decided to purchase an observation hive.  Now I have no experience with this type of hive and there are many brands for sale.  Any and all advice is appreciated except for price.  Per administration rules, please do not post price.  Also there is single window verses multi window, which do you prefer.  Thank you for your input.

"A few years back I put a fat honey frame in my observation hive and it was too close to the glass. I did not realize it until we put the hive back inside. It took the bees two full days to cut it to provide bee space. When they were done, it looked like a laser cut it and the cells looked perfect. It was pretty amazing."

I should add, not an indoor hive, rather outdoor or in a protected but unheated shed.,,,,

I didn't know quoting a price was breaking the rules when all it is is information, not a sales pitch.

The rule of not quoting a price is to prevent advertising.  A price quote may be obtained by personal message.

I don't have any advise on purchasing one but I built a couple last winter that I finally put bees in recently.  You can check out pictures at https://beemaster.com/forum/index.php?topic=49772.msg433730#msg433730.

You lost me, Van, with the outdoors restriction. I have plans for a wall mounted
single face hive that works.
I think I have published the story here (BMA) before today. It is that colony which
helped myself and others understand beeworks a very long time ago :-)

Cheers.

Van,
Since you plan on putting it outside exposed to cold weather, I recommend you do not get a single frame hive as a lot of them are. My OH is 2 frames by 4 high. I am installing it in my screened in patio in my new house right now. The reason I am putting it on the patio is because there is not another place to put it inside this brick house. I will have to add winter insulation boards to give them a chance on our cold days. I may have to build a new one if it turns out that 2 frames thick is not enough.
