Who?s Running a Wood Stove?

I have an Englands 30NC. Went out to town today to do some things and they were clearing the power line right of ways. I stopped and ask some of the home owners that had trees dropped in their front yards about the wood. I?m going to go by Saturday and get it if someone hasn?t snatched it up yet by then.

I?ve got an older Appalachian 36BW that I just received a set of replacement catalytic combusters for today.  Made the replacement and fired the old girl up.  I try and heat mostly with wood.  I had 5 trees cut down earlier this year - 4 dead red oak and an ash.  I just finished splitting and stacking tree 4 of the 5 today so one to go.  In addition  a neighbor gave me three trees that she?d had cut late last year.  Looked like an Ash, a white oak and a poplar.  I?m turning into a wood hoarder lol.  My ultimate goal is a three year supply which if weather remains warm the way it has - I?m getting close LOL.

30 that is a nice looking heater. Is your heater thermostatic controlled? Good luck on the neighbors firewood.

I use to use a brand called Wonderwood. The great thing about the Wonderwood was the thermostat control. The thermostat would close off the draft when the heater would reach a certain temperature thus saving wood. When it would cool off slightly the draft door would re-open, once again letting in air which fed the regulated the fire..  Warn and comfortable while saving wood. Awesome heater..

As I was reading your post and trees, I was thinking, oak, ash, poplar, sounds like my neck of the woods. Turns out, it looks like you are in NC too. Guilford Co. I know what you mean about it being warm. You kinda have to pick your days now and let it die out mid morning.
I?m burning 3year old wood right now. I usually try to get a good tree or two every year and put it up to dry till I get to that side of the stacks, and by then I?ve replenished the stacks from the other side.

Mine has an auto air control function. When it gets up to temp it will throw the ?damper? (they don?t call it a damper, but it works like one). Mine does not reopen as it cools though. It?s an optional use item. You can run it manually, which is what I usually do.

I just started a fresh fire for the nite. I clean the glass each time I start a new fire since it gets nasty when the fires die down and aren?t hot enough.
It takes less than 3 minutes and keeps it nice.

Wet paper towel dipped in ashes and smear the slurry around. Wait 20-30 seconds and wipe off with a damp towel then a dry one to get the haze off.

Gathered up one of the trees today out of a lady?s yard. Pretty good little score for a tree already cut into logs on the side of the road.

I like my wood heater, it?s getting on now and probably needs replacing but the new ones can?t be shut down like this one with a damper in the flue and on the unit.
Our wood of choice is a red wood, Jarrah which you may have heard of before, it?s also responsible for our most desirable, and expensive, honey. Hot burner with minimal ash. I don?t use it though as my wood source is the modest block I live on and what I can scavenger from the neighbourhood. Many pf the tree loppers will actually drop the wood off of you ask them as it?s easier and cheaper to dispose of the large logs. Never Jarrah of course but it still burns though. I?ve heard of the wood ash cleaner, nice to see it actually works, I always forget and finish up using a razor blade. I heard the other day that adding an aluminium can to the fire will clean out the creosote from the flue as it burns, anyone do this?

If it ain?t broke, don?t fix it. What?s wrong with your current stove?
Mine is a newer one and you are limited on controls, but it is efficient and clean burning. It will flat run you out of the house. I generally burn one or two splits at a time rather than loading it up. I can control the heat with how much wood I load rather than how much air I give it. I can put a single split or two in at nite and still rekindle it in the morning off the coals. If it?s really cold I might put three in.
With the secondary burners it really burns clean. I scoop out the ashes every few weeks. It burns most everything and it goes out the chimney as invisible smoke. When it?s running at temp you can?t see it really can?t smell the smoke outside. Only on light up or as it dies can you see smoke on the chimney.

Hey that's brilliant!  I'm going to show this to my dad; he might want to give that a try. 

Our house had two fireplaces, one in the kitchen (which was extremely not up to code) and one in the living room, so when we bought the place, we got wood stove inserts for them.  I think they are from Vermont Castings.  We usually only run the one in the kitchen and supplement with HVAC unless it's really cold, when we turn off the HVAC and run both the kitchen insert and the big one in the living room full time.

Before I became disabled, I had a wood burning outside water stove. I would burn 6 plus cords each year. I had 3 or 4 tree trimmers that would bring me oak, hickory, maple, ETC. All I had to do was saw to length and split with a gas powered splitter.

Now we only have a fireplace at the lake. We use it on weekends. Again, last Friday I called a local tree trimmer. Saturday he brought me 2 loads of red oak logs for free. I have never had to pay for wood delivered to my home. Tree trimmers do pay to dump it, so they are happy to give it to you free.

Got about half of the red oak up today.
One day I?ll get a log splitter. For now it?s various mauls. This hard oak needs the monster maul.

Good looking Oak.
We, (my uncle),built a log splitter with a rebuilt Onan twin cylinder engine, a bulldozer cylinder, pump and control valve. We also built the hydraulic tank. It was a bad shut your mouth. This was housed on a homemade frame which resembled a miniature bush hog with offset spindle axles which we could hook to the cylinder and lower it to the ground  for the big ones we could not pick up. Just simply rolled them on. Split just about what ever you could get on it.  My uncle welded stainless steel rods on the cutting edge of the splitter part which held a good sharp edge..When we was finished hooked the chain to the lever of the axles and raised it up be extending the cylinder, by its own power. Stayed hooked to the truck till we were through with it. It was fast, efficient and would work a crew to the bone trying to keep up. lol

After nearly 40 years of winter use it?s starting to rust out. I like it because you can shut it down completely which you can?t do to the new ones.

I bought a 15T kinetic wood splitter a few years back, really fun to use especially on the knotted gnarley logs, the type where the axe bounces off the wood when struck. The only problem is having to lift the wood onto the splitter bed which is waist height. Still easier than swinging a block splitter though.
Have you watched the guys competing on the Stihl Timbersports?

Sound like a new stove is in order then. You might find a good old papa bear on some classified adds somewhere. Other than that it?s all new EPA approved stoves. I like mine, it?s easy to control with the fuel, but like you say, I can?t choke it out cold.

I?ve watched some of that. There is a guy swinging axes a little wildly that split a bunch of wood real fast. It also looked like a good way to chop an ankle. I?ll see if I can find the video.

Back in the early 80s my old man was laid off of work for three years and built wood stoves to get by,  I still have one of the earliest ones in my shed and it has never rusted out or burnt out yet.  Works great.  He used hot water heater tanks for the fire box.  I used to run it all year but have gotten lazy on working in the shed and have only had it going twice this year.  The house I grew up in had a gravity fed wood furnace in the basement.   I have spent a lot of my life cutting wood.  In the end we used a log splitter.  Got a load for my uncle the other day with some logs I never got around to cutting into boards.  We used a tractor and bucket to hole the logs over the trailer and cut into chunks right on the trailer to be split later.  Not how we did it in the old days but not as young as I was in the old days either.

Yep wood is how we heated for years too. Then came the log splitter. Splitting it by hand is good exercise but the splitter sure makes it nice!

I went looking for wood and found a yard with a 70? cottonwood that had been cut down and left there. That tree kept us warm as we all slept around the fireplace in the living room.
I cut the tree up with a small chainsaw and split it with a ax.
One nice thing about splitting wood is that you burn off a lot of frustration very quickly swinging away at those logs.
One of the easiest logs to split is a cotton wood.
I could split a 20? log with one chop. By comparison, a 14? diameter water oak is almost impossible to split. The fibers act like they are braided through out the wood.

What?s the average winter down there? Can?t get too cold for too long I wouldn?t think, but heck, I burn a low fire at 45 degree nights and let it die out for the 70 degree days sometimes. Other times I run week end on end when it?s in the 30s for the highs. Usually it?s January-early March when it?s coldest here.
