Elmore County Alabama is right above Montgomery County

Last week in Montgomery I saw trees with red flowers, others with light yellow flowers and yet a very few with white flowers. Hen bit, daffodils, and dandelions wide open. Maples been blooming about a week there. Purple Martins begin arriving up from S. America about a week ago.

NW corner of Elmore co; Hen bit and dandelions. I saw Blueberry and plums budding real good. Maybe another week? Hickory trees with good buds. I saw a blackberry vine with new growth. My white clover is coming up fairly well. When all the leaves are off the sycamore tree down in the bottom by the chicken pen and I hear a whippoorwill - it's spring.

Today saw Red Maple, Daffodils, and Henbit in full bloom.  White clover, plum, and Crabapple had just a few blooms open.  Huckel Berry, Camellia and Laurel Cherry have bud getting ready to open.

Lot's of red maple, dioecious magnolia, and daffodils (one of my favorite flowers).

However...we are looking at lows in the upper 20s this week, too. Some places will be in the mid 20s. That may knock back flowering a week or so. And I saw a bumble bee wearing a pullover sweatshirt yesterday...

3/17 one Bradford pear in full bloom down on the creek. The ones on the By-pass in town were about to burst. Likely will be in full bloom before the week is out.

Henbit (that purple stuff) painting yards and roadsides purple.

Tree pollen is thick. Just ask the sinuses and I don't have allergies.

Most everything is behind this year as compared to the past couple years.

yellow clover blooms are moving east.  i saw sone around geneva, georgia yesterday.  my bees are working like there is a major flow on and blackberry isn't open enough for them to be working that.  you can smell nectar when you pop the tops and they are starting to draw out a little comb in a few hives.  blackberries should be wide open by the weekend and i think clover will be coming in by the following weekend.  i going to say it's officially started in middle georgia.

Seems no one is chiming in from NY - specifically NYC - so I thought I'd add a note.

Up to three weeks ago we had nothing.  Then witch hazel bloomed..then the croci and a few narcissus came out.

This week we've had the cherry, crabapple and apricot trees bloom, though it's been rainy and cold so I don't see much bee activity on them.
Flowers: we still with crocus, daffodils and hyacinths. A few dandelions are starting to push up leaves and in sunny, sheltered areas, I saw a few small blooms. No other blooming weeds. The city tends to be an ecological wasteland and monoculture of non-native plantings, so I've had to feed syrup for quite a while the last two springs before my garden got up and running.

Last week the maple trees were budding out and today, I see that their flowers have opened; the oaks and plane tree buds are just starting to swell. No holly, privet or anything else I can see.

We tend to be a bit cooler here on the south side of Brooklyn than perhaps inland because of our proximity to the ocean and steady harbor breezes, and this winter's weather was unbelieveably snowy, wet and variable. Last weekend it was in the mid-50's then it dropped to the 30's. Even though the weather service says it's 47 degrees today, I see that the girls are out of the hive and flying around in the sun, but it's nippy - definitely still coat weather.

I was at a back gate opening it an hour after dawn. A bee landed on my hand. Looked around and found what think is black gum (tupelo).
Blackberry is still in full bloom. Saw a lot of gallberry buds and one bush had a few flowers. A lot of it is still just starting to make tiny pin head sized buds.
Holly is still in bloom. The ones in bloom last week are almost done but new ones are starting.

What kind of hollies are blooming where you're at in Florida?
Also, Catalpas are blooming here in GA, now? I live in Thomson, GA.

There are bookoos of American Holly trees in the woods around here--privet as well and I'm keeping my eyes peeled for when they come into bloom! Reckon I'd better be oogling the hollies tomorrow! [=

this year is way off from what i remember last year.  blackberries still haven't all bloomed and clover is just opening up good, tulip poplars have just started putting on leaves in the last week or so.  last year the blackberries and clover were about done, the poplars were blooming.  seems like the privet opened around the last week of april and was gone by may 15th.  then it was pretty much over until goldenrod.

Well the girls have been bringing in pollen for 2 weeks now, not sure if they went to dollar general, but they were loaded coming in. Poplar trees have been budded for a couple of weeks, not all of them but many, I saw a few dandelions today in my travels. There are small white and purple flowers on the ground in the wooded areas, maple trees starting to open up. I live an hour north of Albany so. I am surprised no one else has commented from this area.

In Parker, Colorado: maples and wild flowers are blooming... Also cottonwood. That's about it though. Oh and I'm at 6800'. South Denver has crab apples, dogwood, pears and other flowering trees open and past prime, but they're at rough 56-5800'. Elevation makes a huge difference here.

What's bloomin' for bees in Connecticut?  No, seriously - I'm asking!  We just installed our first 2 nucs and I'm seeing about 6 in 40 of the girls coming in with pollen - but I don't know their primary sources at this time of year -or what's getting ready to bloom in June/July.  Any CT beeks out there who know the flow in our little corner of the beekeeping world?

I can tell you that I have several pollinator friendly plants in the garden getting ready to bloom - Comfry, Meadow Sage and culinary sage will all be blooming any day now.  My geranium (Cranesbill Beven's Variety) is just finishing it's spring flush - I understand honeybees like cranesbill, but I have yet to see it!  Too bad they arrived just a little too late to test that theory!  Would love to hear what other CT Beeks are seeing in their gardens and neighborhoods for the annual pollen flows.  Should we throw on a pollen patty at the next inspection to help them build up the brood production?
Title: Re: Lets follow the bloom 2014
Post by: buzzbee on May 27, 2014, 10:36:16 pm
Honey bees may not stop at small gardens and check the flowers if there is a large floral nectar or pollen source within a couple mile radius. I am betting you may have lots in bloom even though it may not produce a very visible flower. Willows and maples may be in bloom in your area. You will take more notice to subtle blooms as you keep bees. Maybe someone from your neck of the woods will chime in. :)

Go to where there is a big mixup of foliage (that's relatively quiet) and just listen. If you hear bees--and you will if they are there--then look to see what it is that they're after.. That's how we discovered just recently that they're all over wild persimmon blooms.. I was hiding in a patch of trees/foliage trying to shoot a crow that's part of the crowd that keeps pullin' up my corn!  [=

I live at 6800' in Colorado and I cannot for the life of me understand what my bees are foraging, but they are. I can confirm that choke cherries are blooming and of course dandelions. I know there are wild flowers too but it never seems like much. Any maybe to some peoples view there isn't much here but those bees are finding it!

I guess I'm in the same boat as you are Ryan820 - I don't know what they are finding, but I am seeing about 1 in 8 bees coming in heavy with pollen.  What percentage of bees coming in with pollen tells you that the flow is strong?  Is that 1 in 8 bees a decent flow or light flow?  Is there any way, other than a hive inspection, to identify nectar flow?

I'm trying to figure out what types of things I can identify about the hive by watching the front door  vs. poking around doing unnecessary inspections.  Cause, as a new beekeeper, I'm excited and want to be watching and learning - but I know better than to interfere too much and interrupt the hives without a specific care need. It's just so hard!  So, tell me - what can I learn from observing the hive from the outside??

Sago's are strange plants. They go for years with no blooms then the produce pollen, looks like a  large beige pine cone.  Maybe a couple of times and then they produce a large hidden flower that produces a lot of red poison balls about the size of a large raddish. If your dog chews on it, they die. Even if you get them to a vet. The vet will tell you there is nothing they can do.
