Turns out that the culprits were two wasp nest, in a palm tree. One of our local beekeepers' sons was stung by a wasp near that very spot the day before. Crazy.

See, the bees get the bad name when they were not actually involved.

Well it *was* dark when the stinging happened.

And many of the news sites have http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/inalameda/detail?&entry_id=67169updated their articles to say that it was wasps, not bees.

Rule #1, never use fireworks on any type of bees nest, unless you have a video camera ready.

This proves my theory that not every other person I run across is allergic to stings, like they say they are.

JP, if everyone wasn't "deathly allergic" to bees we wouldn't get near the removal calls that we do!

Scott
"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

I don't think that it should be the bees getting the bad name.

If only a few wasp stings were all that anybody suffered from fireworks.
