Anyone ever videotape a hive entrance?
« on: August 17, 2015, 09:19:09 pm »
Hi
I recently videotaped my hive entrance.  I let it run for 50 or so minutes.  I just watched it and had a few laughs.  I watched a bee getting muscled out of the hive.

Then I watched a dead bee pulled out of the hive, then left blocking the hive entrance causing a blockade.  Then moved two inches to the side of the entrance.  Then a few minutes later, being pulled back inside the hive.  Wondering why one would drag a dead bee back inside?

I'm always learning new things about them.

I would love to figure out a way to videotape them inside the hive.

thanks
David

Okay, are you ready for this one?

She got turned around

To answer your question - I have no idea.

A tad time consuming, but as you have shown chickenwing654 a fascinating trip. That is more or less what the guy who won the Nobel prize did to figure out what the dance in the front of the hive was all about.

Here is what you need to get started. I think that would be a hoot. http://www.leevalley.com/en/garden/page.aspx?cat=2,10719&p=69733

Get an observation hive.  You can see everything live 24 hours a day.  No need to video... but you could if you wanted to...

I recently videotaped my hive entrance.  I let it run for 50 or so minutes.

Whenever I visit my hives (if the light is good), I put my cellphone near the hive entrance and take 5 minute videos while I do other things (such as dealing with the other hive, or packing up my beekeeping stuff).  Very important to make sure the wind can't blow off the cellphone (has happened a few times) and... don't drive off without the phone.

ugcheleuce,
I'd be careful about that sort of thing, especially if you didn't get a waiver. There is privacy laws.... and stalking laws. You might get stung on that one...
Jus sayin... bee careful  :cheesy:

I do kind of the same thing.  I set my iphone on top of the hive I am working next, camera pointing down over the edge at the landing board.  I usually record on slow motion so I can go back and watch it later to see how much pollen they are bringing in.  That and I just like watching them lol
