Title: Honey Press for wax ?
Post by: damienpryan on December 08, 2019, 11:18:00 pm
Hi All,

I was looking a wax press like this for cappings.
https://beeaustralian.com.au/product/wax-press-stainless-steel/

I'm wondering if can also be used to press wax out of old brood comb.
Say you put it in a big container of water that was at 90 degrees Celcius (above wax melting temperature) and put the wax in some sort of cloth/muslin bag and then squeeze, then would you get relatively clean liquid wax coming out ?

Or would it all just be a big mess ;-).

Cheers

Damien

Kinda think you would end up with a bit of a mess.
I built myself a solar wax melter we have plenty of sun in our neck of the woods.
Works like a dream takes 4 deep frames at a time and all the gunk, brood etc gets left behind on the tray, the wax runs off into a 2l ice cream container with a bit of water in it.

Use it for everything old frames, burr comb, cappings.

When the sun goes down just take the container out and you have a nice rectangle of wax. Scrape the gunk off the tray and ready for the next lot.
Cheers

Presses like that have been used for centuries to separate wax. You heat the wax in water and use cheese cloth or burlap, tie it up and put it in the press. Water and clean wax comes out and then you remove the cloth bag and dump out the black comb. There are videos on utube of how it was done during the last century. I will see if I can find it.

Kelley used to sell a wax press.  It was very expensive but very productive at getting wax out of old brood comb.

thanks guys.

I'll buy the press and try it out.

At least I know it will work for cappings!

Once I have enough old brood comb I'll report on old style wax rendering.
