rough pine? - unplaned - building top bar hive
« on: January 12, 2011, 05:56:21 pm »
Hi there,

I am really interested in starting up beekeeping and top bar hives. I've picked top bar hives because they look easy to build and much less expensive. I was out at the local Home Depot here in Ottawa (Canada), and found the most cost effective pine is rough 1" thick x 12" x multiple lengths. I could pay a bit more and get the planed pine if that is better.
Can anyone recommend one over the other?
I'd like to build a couple of hives withing the next 2 weeks if possible as my first step.

Thank you.

Oh Canada!

Rough cut is fine.

It is all that sam comfort uses -> http://beekeeperlinda.blogspot.com/2010/02/sam-comfort-and-top-bar-hives.html

As long as the price is right, any wood will work.   (as long as it is sorta straight).

Rough cut will get more propolis which is probably a good thing.
