Size Matters
« on: July 06, 2017, 02:29:46 am »
I previously posted I am having trouble with Banded Paper Wasp tormenting the hives and that I kill 2-7 a day and I thought they were big but they are only 1/3 the size of this one.
I found this today between Frames 4-5 and in the middle of the frame in lower box.
The girls had killed it and maybe it killed my Queen, I am not sure yet.
This thing is 2 inches long (5 CM).
It looks to big to even be Apis Dorsata as Internet says they get to 3 cm but this one is 5 cm.

Bought my first NUC April 7, 2016.
Like all you when you first started, I am fascinated with beginning Beekeeping and trying to learn all I can.
I retired May 2015 and have added this to my short list of hobbies.

It looks more like a moth in the picture, though real life it may look different.  Definitely not dorsata.

After posting, it was identified to me as. Tomato Hornworm Moth and it is also known as a Death Head Hawk Moth

Known for masking itself to smell like a bee and raiding beehives for honey

It is in perfect shape and I have been talking to the Entemology Professor here at University and she wants me to collect all the Banded Paper Wasps for her research and I froze the Death Head Moth and will give that to her also.
