"Bearding" is it a sign of something?
« on: May 11, 2014, 04:23:21 pm »
Yesterday I did my first cut-out....I capture the queen, rubber-banded all the brood comb, and added some honey comb.  This morning I released the queen and reduced the entrance a little bit.  This afternoon the bees are "bearding" the entrance to the hive.....is this a way of orienting or a signal of something else?  Looking for some info.

If it's as warm in Jawjah as it is here.
I'd say they're bearding to cool the hive down abit.
With the new brood comb and all the bees and with the reduced entrance I'd say it's hot in there.

Should I open the entrance all the way?  I have them on a screen bottom board.

I have been told by beekeepers who do cutouts in the southern part United States is not a good idea to put in comb honey.  What I have been told makes a good hiding place for SHB and it makes the bee's wet.  (SHB) Small Hive Beetles

I second Jim's post. I did several cutouts last year. I left honey comb in a few of them. Those bees didnt make it. Seems like the cutout proces demoralizes them for a few days, and gives shb time to take over. More experienced beeks warned me. No honey comb in the cutout. Feed them.
