Bees and the garden
« on: August 15, 2013, 09:35:39 am »
I bought my house 3 years ago and have been slowly working on the garden.  The people that lived there before me didn't care for gardening so theirs a lot to do.  Now that i have bees i want to plant stuff for the bees.  Anyone have a nice list of plants that bees like?    Note: Denmark weather is about the same as the north east USA so everything has to be frost hardy.

Here is a link to my current list -  Plants bees love

Trees: Linden, Sourwood, Tupelo, Tulip Tree, Black Locust (not to be confused with Honey Locust), Magnolias,

Food: Raspberries, Blueberries/Cranberry, Black Berry, Strawberry.

Shrubs: Oregon Grape, Alternate-leaf Dogwood, Hawthorn, Buttonbush, St. Johnswort (not the herbaceous perennial ones), Clethra alnifolia,

Ephemerals: Woodland Poppy, Wild Hyacinth, Jacob's Ladder, Fernleaf Phacelia.

Wildflowers: Mountain Mint, Anise Hyssop, Stokes Aster, Blanket Flower, Milkweed, Blazing Star, Joe Pye Weed, Jewelweed, Fireweed, Ironweed, Goldenrod, and Asters (not mums!). Rudbeckia laciniata is another nice one.

I wrote a book on the topic that covers most of the native plants honeybees love.

I didn't see this suggestion yet.  I can tell you that the bees absolutely LOVE sweet clover.  It grows four to five feet tall and comes in either yellow or white.  We don't have very many bees and this was clearly a favorite.  I'm going to sow some more for our bees.

When I was about five years old there was a field behind where we lived that was full of the sweet clover and also full of bees.

I don't think honey bees can use red clover.
Good luck!
Bill
