If that is an active hive you shouldn't leave it open with wet frames.  You can lose the hive.

Salty,
Nice job. You obviously still have a good flow on. The bees are working so hard they do not care about the bucket of honey.
If I did that here right now, I would have a couple thousand bees swarming the bucket, trying to carry it away. 😄

That?s a screened in porch.
Ace i put the frames into a kinda bait hive (no bees or colony)  and closed it - I guess that may train robbers? Was just doing a little experiment if they would set up

My active hives are topped secure

I also have the blessing of a Grandson that enjoys helping with our bees. Another great blessing is having honey on the table.

Yes it may.  The thing is there is a part of the day that becomes a dearth.  Nectar doesn't flow every hour of the day and when it whines down the bees will go after the open frames so this should not be close to your active hives.  It is when the honey is cleaned out that they will look for more near by.  You are also inviting mite redden bees from other hives miles away.  The best time to do this is during bad weather.  Bees will fly in rain but not far.

Awesome
I took some to 3 neighbors , one to the butcher shop and he traded me 2 pounds of fennel sausage.
Pretty amazing what a barter system this could make

Salty, I adore all post when beeks involve the kids.  Reminds me of my own youth: my Grandpa had bees.  Dad, bought my first hive when I was 13 years of age, $35.00.
Blessings

Did you save the foundation or crush it all?

I crushed it all-
So two questions- without using a frame spinner

What do you do to save comb on a foundation frame? Instead of decapping and scraping I guess just decap and drain what you can then give the wet frames back to the hive?

How do you save comb from a foundation less frame and still extract the honey?

I would de-cap and turn upside down on a bucket or something and let it drain for a while.

Salty,
I put foundation less frames in my extractor all the time. They are mediums and as long as they are connected all the way around they spin out. If they are brand new white comb and not connected, we use it as cut comb.

If the honey is capped, it will be pretty thick and probably won?t drain out very well. Yesterday I pulled supers and had an extra frame that was not capped and I laid it on its side on top of a super and drove an hour to get home. None of it dripped out. Temp was in the high 80?s.
I recommend if you want to try to drip the honey that you make a honey heater from one of the many designs that are on BeeMaster and heat the honey to 100 degrees. Then decap it and turn them upside down.

Jim
When I started, I asked if I should use foundation or not-
My friend said don?t stress your bees out- meaning give them foundation- what?s your thoughts and how do I make my frames using fishing line or popsicle sticks- they?re too skinny to glue in straight
Thanks

Salty,
Do you know a friend that is a woodworker. If so ask them to make up wood strips that are just thin enough to fit in the slot and 3/8 inch wide by the length of the slot minus one inch. Then stack them together and paint one edge with melted bees wax. Then you can just use 3 tacos to hold them in place. I use a finish nailer with 5/8 nails. Are you using deeps or mediums for supers? Deeps I would add support, mediums do not need it.
Bees build faster on foundation less than foundation.

After watching your video, I pulled a few frames from my bees also. I have yet to purchase an  extractor. I had the very same questions.  I did a little research and came up with a video called extracting honey on the cheap. I did as directed and am happy to tell you that I did save my foundation less foundations . Not the comb itself but the important foundation. Don says the bees will quickly repair the comb. Just another reason I am glad that I placed  fishing line in my frames before the comb was drawn, I could.not have been more pleased. I am wondering if this same process could be done without any type backing. I was really surprised as to how sturdy the natural foundation was. If I can find the video, I will post it here for you if you are interested?

Jim can I incorporate the new frames along with foundation frames as I switch over or does the whole box need changing at one time?

Salty,
If you put foundation and foundation less in your hive, they will build the foundation less first. Sometimes they will ignore the plastic and even the wax. I often put un drawn frames of any of the 3 between fully drawn frames. In a good flow they will draw them but not always.

Salty, I can't say anything about extracting, but my bees are building wonderfully on foundationless frames, the kind with the wedge you break off. I re-attach it sideways with glue and a cheap staple gun, and no wax applied at all. The bees steadily build comb on each one.
If there is straight brood comb guiding their work, the bees build it evenly. If not, they build it it bulging out with honey sometimes, but I understand that they build badly on wax and plastic also sometimes. Cao helped me to understand how to slowly feed empty frames into the brood area, so those nice, straight, fully attached combs slowly work their way to the honey area. I imagine the former brood frames filled with honey would stand up better to an extractor.

Cao is a nice fellow and knows what he is talking about, I listen closely to what he says and agree with him almost every time...

How much honey did you end up getting?

7 quarts from 7 frames - some had the foundation and some were from the original cutout- very sweet!!  Somewhere over my fence to the northwest!!
