My sweet Grandson, the bee rescuer
« on: May 21, 2007, 10:55:23 am »
Saturday my husband and I were taking a break, sitting under our burgundy Beech tree by our pool.  The weather was not the greatest, cool, but not raining at that time.  My youngest Grandson, who is 8 years old, came running over to me with his red sword in his hands shouting "Grandma, I saved one of your bees!!!!"  Of course I immediately got up to see what he had in store for me.  He was very excited.  He said that he found the bee floating (this brings tears of pride to my eyes at this moment, and sometimes this makes it hard to type) in a little bucket of water.  Sure enough, on the end of his sword was a little honeybee.  I encouraged the cold little bee to climb onto my finger and placed her on the palm of my hand.  I cupped both my hands together and explained to him that she cannot fly, she is wet and too cold to barely even move.  I told him to watch her.  He did and I did.  I breathed my warm breath on this little bee, little bits at a time.  Soon the drop of water that was on her wing evaporated, she began to move around a little bit.  He watched with fascination.  I told him that soon she would be moving her wings.  Sure enough, a few minutes later, she fanned her wings a little, began to crawl around on my cupped palm a little bit more.  We waited.   Then a few minutes later, she flew away, off to do the business that she had intended to do when she had left her home.  This process took about 10 minutes, but it was worth it.  My Grandson saw this little tiny bee that was surely doomed, come back to life and head off into the great big blue yonder.  This is my little man that was so proud last summer when he rescued so many bees from their demise in our swimming pool, he is a bee rescuer!!!!

I am a lucky woman and am grateful that I have these little men that live so close to me, that I can teach them these beautiful little pieces of life that will make them turn into grown men that may teach their own children well.  It is times like this that the peace that I have tried to instill with my Grandsons about a love of the insect and flower world make my heart swell with pride for them.  They have been taught lessons of kindness and goodness that will be with them for the rest of their lives.

They will never be one of the nasty little kids that I have seen torment insects, and they may even be humans that will prevent others from tormenting and harming the beautiful little creatures of our world that never meant anybody any harm.

Have a wonderful day, teach your children well, great life, love life, great health.  Cindi
There are strange things done in the midnight sun by the men who moil for gold.  The Arctic trails have their secret tales that would make your blood run cold.  The Northern Lights have seen queer sights, but the queerest they ever did see, what the night on the marge of Lake Lebarge, I cremated Sam McGee.  Robert Service

That's a great story Cindi.  Thanks for sharing.

I once saw an episode on Myth-Busters where they revived a group of bees that had been "drowned" with a hair dryer.
