Title: SEC Football
Post by: VolunteerK9 on October 03, 2011, 11:53:36 am
Well, my beloved Gamecocks fell to Auburn this past weekend but as luck would have it Florida fell to the Crimson Tide. Important to me because the Gamecocks and Gators are now 4-1 teams in the SEC East Division and Im hoping to see S. Carolina make it to the SEC Championship again this year. Keeping my fingers crossed. Alabama looks phenomenal though-they are going to be a tough team to beat.

It pained me to see the gamecocks fall to the the aubies. I was hoping to see the Old Ball Coach run the table for an opportunity to see them in Atlanta. Problem is that with Garcia under center that was is never going to happen, he's a friggen headcase. If Spurrier has a fatal flaw it's his loyalty to his quarterback, it's cost him more than one game in his career. This year it'll cost him a shot at Bama.
Probably for the good though as I expect Garcia would wet his pants in front of the defense of the Tide.

The only thing I can figure out about why Spurrier keeps him, Garcias parents, Grandparents, someone must be a serious, Alumni contributor. He's horrible. I think he's leading the nation in interceptions already and the season has barely started. ESPN's site has got a Spurrier quote on that says 'expect changes in SC's offense'. They need it and soon.

I watched part of the Florida / Bama game.  The Gators looked horrible!  When is Charlie Weiss going to get that offense going?  Like he did at Notre Dame :-D

Well...my humble .02 is that the program was so totally built around a Tebow style of offense that they have forgotten what life was like before they got him. I think they are having to start all over again from scratch.

It will be interesting to watch the Gators vs Volunteers this year.  That was always a heated rivalry when coach Fulmer was around.  The Volunteers might get the best of them this year :)

K9 I agree with you.  That seems to be one of the flaws of the Rich Rodriguez / Urban Meyer designs.  Your whole program is built around one guy; a talented (but rare) option QB.   When he’s gone, the entire program collapses.

Until the Florida/Bama game Florida looked pretty unstoppable folks. They were kickin' but big time. Alabama is just a superior talent with one heck of a coach. I'm actually a little concerned about our tigers playing Florida. Our offense can be a little shaky at times.

The Bama/LSU game should be an awesome match up but first we need to get past Florida.

Fulmer is a nice enough guy, its just that UT fans expected National Championship titles year after year since 98 and it wasnt happening. The they got Boy Wonder Kiffin that was supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread til he bailed on them after the first year. Heard they were going to name a landfill after him :)

Florida wont be a problem for the Tigers now JP. They lost their starting QB against Bama and the poor kid that replaced him had the 'deer in the headlight' look. He did his best, but as a true freshman in the toughest conference in the nation, he's got his job cut out for him.

LSU Florida should be good.
LSU Bama will be for all the marbles circle nov 5 that will be the day the national champion should be crowned
its a shame the SEC beats each other to death all year then some garbage slips in as the number 2 and plays for a championship

Yeah thats what Ive said for a long time. The SEC just hammers away at each other all year long, suffering injuries all the way and then a team that has played the equivalent on Junior Varsity team all year gets the lime light. Boise State comes to mind.

Football Saturday!!!!

I'll spend all day today glued in front of the TV yelling, hooping and hollering :)

My predictions:

Georgia over Tennessee, LSU over Florida, Gamecocks hopefully over Kentucky (SC finally benched Garcia) . Those are the 3 main ones that I will be watching today. Keeping fingers crossed.

When it’s sunny and in the 80s in Michigan in October to boot, it’s a rare thing!  I’m skipping the football today to soak up some sun outside :)  I'll pop back in to check the scores on the computer every so often.

Pop the caps off some cold ones, nuc up some wings and turn the tv on to watch me some Gamecocks vs. Mississippi in Starksville. Hoping they will put a SEC East flogging on some Bulldogs. Garcia is finally gone due to a little smoking herb and drinking liquid tater juice infraction (again) so we will see how Connor Shaw can handle his second full game in the commanders seat.

Yup, sad day for me too. Gamecocks lost, Bama lost. Wheres a kleenex when you need one? Now its going to come down to LSU vs. Georgia (more than likely) for the SEC Championship. My Gamecocks still have a chance, but their biggest playmakers are out on the injured list. Come on Blakeney, dont tell me that your on the Orange bandwagon? Who did they manage to beat? MTSU? :)

Wow, who could have predicted such a low scoring defensive game?  Not, me!  I guess I better stick to politics :-D

I would have preferred to watch a shootout myself, but I guess these two teams really are pretty well balanced.   I saw a lot of Les Mile’s old boss in his constant “run up the middle” play calling.  I thought he was being too conservative, but in the end, he won again.

Congrats to both sides.  Two great teams.
Title: Re: SEC Football
Post by: bulldog on November 07, 2011, 11:07:11 pm
wow, what a game. i knew it would be relatively low scoring, but that was ridiculous. both teams have very stingy defenses. alabama made very few mistakes, but when you play a good team they will capitalize on those mistakes. i have to wonder why saban wanted to try 3 @50 yard field goals when it was obviously beyond their range, imo i think they should have punted and kept them pinned deep. anyway congrats to lsu and their fans. too bad this couldn't have been for the title.

I agree. No disrespect to Boise fans, well maybe a little, but they always are in the Top 10 in the standings and really dont deserve to be. Their schedule isnt no where near as tough as others so it really isnt that hard going undefeated year after year. Sure they won over Georgia, but one ame in the SEC isnt proof positive of their skill. The SEC is their own worst enemy-after a full season of play, they have beaten each other to death, basically just survuval of the fittest. Yup, I AM biased. Here in the south, its Church of God, Baptists, Catholics and SEC football :)

what you say about their schedule  is true, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are no good, they are a good team this year, but were much better two years ago but i would still say they are at least as good as half of the top ten teams right now.

They ain't played worth a crap in years but I still love them.  You can't beat the feeling of walking in Neyland Stadium.  Hopefully they will come outta this slump they've been in and start playing some SEC ball again.

I was just extremely happy that Bama lost b/c our superior at work is from Bama and all I/we here every day, all year long, is how Bama is so awesome, nobody can beat us, 16 National Championships, blah blah, blah.  Over and over and over.  Come Monday all was quiet

Lol, should have heard the crickets when SC finally beat UT at home this year. Co workers were all silent. Given a few more years to build, I think UT will eventually be back on top. I like Dooley-I think he's a real class act. He was left with a pile of poo to sort out thanks to Kiffin and people are expecting miracles out of him NOW. He had precious little scholarship recruiting power and its going to take a while to straighten things back out. I'll never wear orange though. Schoo weee. Ive been to Neyland a couple of times before, but it was to watch the Gamecocks play.

Wait a minute!!!  Are we talking about Tennessee or the federal government????

Maybe the two entities have a similar reason for the problems....start at the top and come down.  Of course if you compare the two then Tennessee really doesn't look as bad as it actually is.

UT will eventually come back. They lost so much in the way of scholarships when they canned Fulmer and then the other moron, Kiffin that came and left didnt help things much. Dooley has very little to work with now, but I think he will eventually turn the program around. I still refuse to wear orange when he does though. Or UT may turn into the new Kentucky.

They'll come back, Vol.  It'll just take some rebuilding and looking for some diamonds in the rough in regards to recruiting.  We all know that in days past they've had some very good teams...give'em time.  As for Kiffin...somebody should've pitched him off the top of Ol' Rocky Top,...he's where he needs to be...on the west coast far from the southeast. ;)

I watched the 2nd half of the Vols vs Vandy tonight.  Vol RB Poole got bounced around like a pinball.  The 4th quarter was exciting.  The Vols finally won a game!  Good for them.  Saw a lot of empty seats in the upper bowl.

Maybe the Vols should have kept wonder boy Kiffen?  USC seems to be a pretty good team with Kiffen as coach; just beat the Ducks!
Title: Re: SEC Football

It's a sad commentary on the Vols that beating Vandy is considered an upset.

As for Kiffen, the next two-three years should be an interesting coaching challenge - that's when the pain of the scholarship reductions is going hurt. USC will still have a blue-chip starting lineup, but won't have any depth at all. Look what happened to the 'other' USC once Marcus Lattimore got injured.
Title: Re: SEC Football

True, but they finally got another one coached up thats doing pretty good-Brandon Wilds. Which is something they (Gamecocks) should have done in the first place. Everyone knew if it was a running play in went to Lattimore and a pass went to Jeffrey. Georgia sealed up the SEC East yesterday-I was really pulling for Kentucky to win that one and I thought they were going to.

UT and Vandy was a pretty good game ....A little heated towards the end as well.

I love football season nearly as much as swarm season :)

I'd hate to see a rematch. 'Bama had their chance, at home, and lost. If they beat LSU on a neutral field in a rematch, that just evens the series and makes the regular season game meaningless.

Ever since Nebraska in 2001, I've felt strongly that a team that doesn't win their conference (or even division), shouldn't play for a national championship.
Title: Re: SEC Football

The two best teams should play for the championship.  The two best teams are LSU and Bama ranked 1 and 2.  Bama lost in overtime by a field goal.  LSU didn't win that game ....Bama ran out of time.  The rematch is just an extension of the first game.

The only down side of two SEC teams playing in the BCS championship is one of them will lose and end the undefeated SEC 7-0 BCS championship record.

Actually, Bama did lose the game. They had several opportunities to win the game in regulation and could not get it done. Overtime, new slate & we took it to 'em. Have to call a spade a spade. Just saying.

There has to be a championship with the best two teams standing. It could wind up being LSU and Bama. We shall see.

A win is a win I agree.  My point was that it was a very close game by two very good football teams and either team could have won.  A re-match would be great.  Who would win?  Who knows?  That's why we have to do it again.  Everyone wants to see the 2 best teams play each other and a good game.  I honestly don't see any other programs today that could give either of those teams a run.

You may see a team like OSU or VT jumping into the national chamionship game because of the Bama loss to LSU.  They don't like to play teams in bowl games that already played each other.  Going to be interesting where all the chips fall if last weekends upsets carry over.  Of course you guys never know Bama could also take another loss.  As crazy as things have been nobody is a for sure win especially when more wins now gets you a better bowl game.

Decisions, decisions..who will they decide to go to the National Championship? It SHOULD be the #1 and #2 teams. Makes sense to me, but with politics and favorites coming in to the equation, I'm not so sure. Ive already heard the arguments being made by commentators that they either didnt want to see a rematch of LSU and Alabama or that it wasnt fair to have two SEC teams in the National Championship. Come on give me a break. Is it the SEC's fault that two of their teams wound up as #1 & #2?

I’m not a fan of rematches from within the same conference, but in this case, I would concede these are the best two teams to play for the championship.

Does anybody think we’ll live long enough to see a playoff system?  Seems like there is just too much money in the bowl games for the schools to ever change.  It’s probably also nice for half the schools to go away winners at the end of the season by winning some bowl game.  Always nice to end a winner, even if it’s not for all the marbles.

LSU by 14 this time :-D
Title: Re: SEC Football
Post by: hankdog1 on December 06, 2011, 06:33:19 pm
Well if they would switch around some stuff with the bowl games eventually you could see a playoff system but you could also keep the bowl games.  You would just have to rotate from year to year the lesser bowl games to where they get a better matchup each year.  Not a big fan of watching another low scoring game between these two but I guess we shall see and without a playoff system we shall never know truely who should be number 1 at the end of the year.

My prediction is another game where LSU gets behind in points but makes up for it in the last quarter. I believe more points will be put up this time but not many more. I'm thinking something like 21-17 Tigers.

...you left something out, I get ahead of myself sometimes typing, too.  Here, I've corrected it for you...it should correctly read:

"I'm thinking something like Tide 21-17 Tigers."   (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-devil05.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php) ROLL TIDE!!!!!

What happens in the unlikely event that Swamp is right?  A close game where the Tide win this time?  Who gets crowned number 1 by the BCS computers?   In such a case, both teams end with one loss to each other.  Who is really better?  Should they share the championship in that case?

The trouble with you Volunteer fans is that when the situation demands it, you aren't prepaired to take matters into your own hands.

For instance when Mike DuBose proved to not be the inspirational coach Bama fans wanted, poor old DuBose came home from a weekend trip to find all his furniture sitting in a moving van.  Say what you will, but Tide fans do know how to send a message.
