My go to book is The Beekeeper's Handbook by Diana Sammataro and Alphonse Avitabile. I have the fourth edition. It really covers all the basics: hive operations, hive management, pests, etc. It has decent illustrations, although no actual photographs. Thorough, but not unnecessarily detailed, and very well organized. A good read cover to cover, and also easy to use as a reference book. That is my #1 recommended book on actually keeping bees.
If you are looking for an good introductory book, I like DK's The Bee Book by Fergus Chadwick, Steve Alton, Emma Sarah Tennant, Bill Fitzmaurice, and Judy Earl. It's a great overview of bees and beekeeping, although it doesn't really cover hive management in depth. It has lots of great photographs and diagrams like most DK books. It's a good book if you are thinking about getting into bees or learning all the very basic information, but it won't get you very far into actually keeping your bees alive and happy.
