I know what you mean about the thick comb, but I think that happens in the honey area for foundation too. Maybe just not as bad.
I was encouraged to add empty frames NOT in the honey area, but to seed them inside the brood nest. The bees build nice, thin, and straight comb there. Then the outer brood frames get pushed more to the outside edge, and are filled with honey.
Good, straight comb is always migrating to the outside edges, and the fat comb eventually gets harvested and is gone.
