He is this years first batch of summer sausage.
I had my wife come out to take pictures. We set up for a wooded backdrop. I said we have to turn around and get the sunset. Then I had to have one with the bees in there too.

Very nice. I have never gone elk hunting but I have seen a lot of them in Yellowstone.
That is one big doe. You never see any that large around here.

Nicey done gents!  I haven't been able to get into the bush this year due to lockdowns here in Oz.  Fingers crossed that changes soon!

Saw 10 deer by 0800 this morning. Temp went from 75F yesterday to 36-38F this morning. Tomorrow morning is supposed to be 25F. Good thing I don?t have to go tomorrow now.

Some nice fall colors before it?s all gone. Next week or two, most of the trees will be bare here.

I was up in Pennsylvania with my brother a week ago. While we were there the trees made a complete change of colors. It was really nice. We miss that down here in Florida.

It is. I like a Marlin. That one is a 1963 make I believe. It wears a leupold M8 4x gloss scope. I wish they still made a gloss scope for the wood guns.

I'm smiling. I'm usually found behind a Bolt Gun or a single shot - I love the TC Contender and Encore. However, I'm a sucker for [beautiful] lever rifles. A few years ago - I was forced to admit that I "collect" lever actions - when I had to dedicate a safe to them ...

I've got the [prerequisite] model 71 (in 348 Win of course - 'cause that's all they were ever made in). And a BLR (circa 1988) in 358 Win. Both of these are primarily for timber-hunting elk - especially in big-bear country.

Also have a pre-64 Win in 30-30. A couple 44 mag Marlins of mid-70:s vintage. A 357 mag marlin ... etc, etc, ...

I like the 44 mag levers for bear hunting. It really knocks black bears down hard. I've taken deer with the 44, 357 and 30-30 thru the yrs also (not going to mention deer hunting with a 94-22 in my younger days ). I just love lever actions - there's always 1 ... or 2 ... in my hunting camp(s).

Anyways - a week ago I was at a show and ran into a beautiful near-mint original lever that I hadn't seen before. It turned out to be a Marlin 336 (circa 1948) in 32 Win Special. (I need another cartridge like I need a hole-in-my-head  :cheesy:  ). I had to buy it - signed paperwork  (thank you kommiefornia) and will pick it up in a week or 2 - when I have time.

So ... I found the mechanism of the 336 to be very unique. I'll have a bit more learning to do with it. Of course, I'll have to order dies - it came with 4 boxes of casings. The owner recommended casting my own bullets for it. I haven't done that before, but I have a good lead pot, so with molds from lymans, that should work.

When I saw yours, i was like "I think I know what that is!!" ... I can't wait to play with mine.

Also, Yes - I concur. Although I don't have scopes on my levers - with the exception of the BLR - I agree that a wood gun needs a gloss scope. It brings out so much more beauty.

Stroll on over to MarlinOwners.com, we call your condition Marlinitis. However you have a variant that sounds like you are plagued by more than just Marlins.

As far as the bolts go, my favorite is the Winchester M70 Featherweight Compact. It?s a 7mm-08 and it?s what I?ve been using on the elk hunts. It?s a sweet little packable gun.

So, I went and found my 357. She had nestled herself in between 2 1894 44 mag's. She allowed-as-how she was quite comfortable. Then she politely, but firmly, reminded me about all the years I spent searching for her - in her condition. ... I don't think she's of a mind to be moved. I'm sorry about that. But I checked for you anyways.  :cheesy: :cheesy:

(P.S. - she said she was really looking forward to the new-comer ... I think the 2 of them are going to hit it off )

There's something very special about filling a tag with a lever action. Next fall, a few of us are heading to Alaska for black bear. The Win Model 71's will be going along. I can't wait!!

CoolBees,
Here are a couple more Marlins for you.

The top one is the 1894CB .45-70 with a long octagonal barrel. I added a grind to fit field pad to it. The bottom one is the 1895CBA .47-70. It has an 18 inch octagonal barrel. I cut an inch off the stock since then and added the same pad, but I wanted to maintain the short length to be used as a bear gun in Griz country. I figure it might go to camp with me on a caribou hunt we are planning. Both are now wearing Ranger Point sights also. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211207/be18b3cda6b6486f18b056f8d83ff01f.jpg)

Marlin .308MX. That was their version of a spire point bullet in a lever. It?s very close to a .308 win.

A little 39a with a skinner sight.

The 45 colt and 45-70 are 2 that I don't have yet. I've owned the 45 Colt in several platforms over the years, but not the Lever ... yet ...

The 45-70 is an excellent cartridge in Alaska and Canada imho. What a great camp gun!

Spring Turkeys - Archery - I LOVE shooting turkeys with a Bow.

Looking back through some pics again. This was a fun one.
I had 6 does slip right up under me. I picked one out and when they were all within 20 yards I took a shot with my Ruger GP100. She mule kicked at the shot and took off with two of the other does. The other three just snapped to alert. What else happened at the shot, was a buck that had come in just behind the does while I was distracted with them came to full alert and I saw his head pop straight up, also within 20 yards at that point, but off to the side a touch. He immediately started to slip off through the thickening edge habitat never presenting a shot. He made it to about 35 yards and entered the overgrown area that had been timbered a few years earlier. I could follow him but he kept putting distance between us, and the brush was impossible. I put up the revolver and took my rifle off the hanger and kept on him. He paused and looked back one last time at 50 yards and the only clear spot on his body was a softball path through the cutover right over his chest. I sent a 180 grain soft point from my .300 WinMag and he just buckled.

You definitely should, if you get the chance. That bear was taken with dogs. California outlawed dogs for bear in 2012, so I went in both 2011 & 2012, just to try it before it was gone. I wasn't really looking forward to it (thought I wouldn't like it) - but it was awesome! The dogs never hurt the bears. The bears never hurt the dogs. The bear runs until it's tired, and climbs a tree. You get to look at the bear and make an informed decision.

I looked at a lot of bears both years. The guide had other clients, but he and I had become friends, so I got first-right-of-refusal on every bear. I turned down Sows, Cubs, and smaller Boars. Other clients took some of them. Late in the 2012 season, I figured I wouldn't get one, and then the guides friend calls and says, "Get that guy over here ASAP - I've got his bear treed". ... It took us a while - but we got there. It was a very nice bear for California.

Funny side-story: I recovered 2 perfectly (fully) mushroomed 240 gr Hornady HP-XTP's from that bear. At home, I'd ask people if they'd like to see my "Pair of Dice" - I'd shake those 2 bullets in my hand and roll them out onto the table like dice. I kept them for a year of so - showing every naive californian that came by - and watching them try to figure out what they were looking at. (Of course I had to tell them eventually ) It amused me greatly ... then the cleaning lady found them on my bar one day, and threw them out as trash. Of course I didn't realize it for a couple weeks ... talk about un-replaceable! Oh well. She didn't know. ... I still miss my "Pair of Dice"!

I can?t tell if it?s just the light or if that?s a brown phase.

He's dark, almost black, with a touch of deep chocolate.

I like that case colored one. I used to have a M94 in .44 that was case colored.

Me too. Especially if it had High Grade wood. ... Ahh, my champagne tastes ...

The website doesn't say if the 460 will load and fire the 454 and 45 LC (as can be done in a revolver). I'm tempted to call them and ask ...

Not this buck of course, but venison none the less.

I started to ask you who that your fellow was in the picture? lol
I thought the same about Alan until he explained it was his son with the boar.. I was thinking what a difference in age appearance a shave makes.. You fellows keep up the good post and pictures. I think many of us really enjoy them.

>who cares. It's fun conversation.

Agreed
I was thinking the same thing!  I personally prefer beardy 30.

I?d verify with them, but if there is an issue it would probably the cycling and or bullet jump. Just thinking out of my butt, however you could get a spike in pressure due to gasses passing it in the throat then building when it slams into the unusually distant rifling. Option 2, gasses pass the bullet in the throat and does not maintain enough pressure to make the bullet exit the muzzle. That one is not likely, but worth looking into, cause that follow up shot would be a doozy. Option 3, a pressure spike similar to loading a reduced load too lite. The bullet isn?t exiting the barrel as fast as pressure is building behind it.
I bet they tell you not to but definitely worth asking.

Is that one you left lay overnight or one that was cleaned and discarded, and they picked it over?

I had foxes get into one of mine one nite I didn?t find till the next day. They just got the guys, so it was still good. I have run foxes off fresh kills too.
One time I had totes tracking me as I tracked a deer with a bow.

Come and kill them here, I read today that in Mo coyotes doubled in numbers last year.
I was sitting on the ground one time probably 30 years ago and one come up to almost arms length behind my back.  I thought it was a deer and was going to wheel around and try and shoot it.  Coyotes are more alert then deer and faster.  I should see more then I do.  I do find that if a deer is still alive but hurt it is more likely to get ate then if it is just laying there dead.  At least that is what I think anyway.  I was a little disappointed cause  the deer would have been good eating for me also.  Not the first time it has happened though.  I have had it go both ways.
Cheers

So, I did get get in a fight with a fox. They were a problem for a while. It was especially bad one year about four years ago. My neighbor killed a couple with a shotgun. One of them came up on the back porch with him. After he had seen it in the yard he went and got his gun and it came right up on the porch.
That same summer, I was I was in my driveway building a ladder rack for a truck. A different neighbor usually sneaks up on me when he sees me outside, just to visit. I was holding a short forked piece of metal about 16 inches long, looking at the terrible diagram spread on the tailgate. Well I heard the gravel roll (assuming it was my neighbor) and turned around just in time to catch a fox by the neck with a pole. What happened was, he was so close, I didn?t even have time to swing. I could only go straight down and push him away, while stepping back. I stumbled and fell, but he stayed at the end of the pole, struggling as I get up.
Next thing you know I?m standing there holding a fox in the air with its neck stuck in the fork somehow. I slammed him down once, came back up for a second go at him, and he slung off during the second roundhouse slam and landed about 10 feet from me. He rolled over, stood back up and looked at me and came at me again. This time is swung the pipe like a golf club and he went about 15 feet and laid there twitching. I went ape poo on him with the post. I never knew 5 seconds could take it out of you so fast. I sat on the ground in the driveway just to catch my breath.

Wow did you happen to have him tested? Not normal for a fox. Usually they are timid and very shy. My uncle caught a very young one in a live trap past summer. He and I were surprised. They were wearing his chickens out. I guess he got lucky on that catch. Plenty more from where that one came from though.  :)

Animal control came out with the sheriffs office. They said since I so cleanly whooped his arse and he never drew blood on me they wouldn?t test him. We just used the catch pole and drug him into the woods behind the house.

30 Good thing you killed him before he bite you. I had a dog bite me when I was around 12 or 13. Actually attack me. Bite me on the arm and neck area. I had to have four rabies shots and wait X number of days while the dog was penned up to make sure he was not rabid. The shots were in the stomach.. Wasn't bad and I had no reaction. The dog turned out clean so I did not have to finish the shots..

30,
Why would they just put a possibly rabid fox in the woods? That is how rabies is spread. Another/bunch of animals eat the carcass and it keeps spreading.

I asked them that, but they said it can?t live in a dead host. Once the fox died, the virus would be dead in a couple hours.

You did right by asking that question.

I found the following article interesting as well as informing. Y'all might find it so as well..

Hunting in 2021 ...

So, in August, I was picking Blackberries (2 gallon pot) ...

... and I made breakfast ... pancakes, fresh blackberries, Vermont Maple syrup, fried eggs from my chickens. ...

And this is one of 2 visitors that showed up ...

He looks like a 4.5 yr old. He is about 80 yds away in this pic. (Picture is a still frame taken out of a video - then downsized to fit here). He then stopped on the other bank of the river, thought about his life and mis-deeds, and then swam across to my side. He ended up about 15 yds from me. .... I didn't care. I've killed plenty of black bears. I wasn't hunting that morning. But ... one more visitor is one more menu item ... I think he figured that out too ... he left in a hurry - shortly after.
