plywood with signs of termites
« on: February 02, 2024, 07:47:18 pm »
Is plywood with signs of termites bad for making a hive body?
I started to cutout a feral hive and I need another hive box to hold the frames of comb.
its too late to get new wood from the store .
i want make a temporary box and cover from some plywood I have lying around, but I am seeing signs termites.
Would this be bad for the bees?

Welcome to Beemaster, unitB!   What exactly do you mean by "signs of termites"?  Just that the wood is damaged from termites, or are there termites in the wood currently?

Thank you,

I am seeing a few termites. its plywood from old shelving.
I cut off the badly damaged part and on the edge, there some little holes, and I saw 3 or so termites. I can't tell how many are inside.

Welcome to Beemaster!

As far as the wood goes you said it's temporary right? I see no issue with using what material you have on hand to do so. Any termites in the wood will now be separated from their colony and will eventually die anyway. Go for it.

No worse than the lumber you cut them out of.  They will be fine.  Transfer them to another box when they settle down.

As mentioned, it shouldn?t bee a problem. Maybe shorter the life of the box if anything.
