Title: Nice Colony In Slidell, Louisiana---July 9, 2009
Post by: JP on July 10, 2009, 12:58:40 am
This colony was in between floor joists. It was a rather young colony and made for a somewhat messy removal as a good bit of the combs were soft and a little too flimsy.

Pretty nice looking queen. Later on in the evening another colony from the area moved in and there was heavy robbing going on, bees tussling everywhere, then come nightfall they were gone!

I'm fairly certain I took approx five other pictures of the queen in the hairclip catcher and what the building looked like after my brother n law(pictured) and I put everything back but the pics are missing, think my camera is doing screwy things lately.

Got stung over my right eye and believe a small part of the stinger is still there, it hurts like the dickens! My wife looked for me, so did I and can't see anything but there is a small dark spot over the eye, perhaps just a bruise from a nasty sting, ouch. :'(

Yet another fine job, and great pictures.  Perhaps we can take up a collection for a new camera since we all enjoy your photos. :-D

Annette, that is my brother n law, Calvin. He has been recovering from a knee injury, poor guy had surgery on his knee and it just wasn't healing so the doctor said he should get three shots injected into the knee, $1,200.00 a pop!

They were very painful but he is doing much better now. I needed some assistance on this job and he was up for the task. I told him there would be a lot of sitting and watching and I believe he enjoyed the show.

He had the chance to see a wild colony living in someone's house, showed him the queen bee, got to taste some fresh honey and witness some crazy robbing going on.

I was actually quite ok with the bees that showed up from a neighboring colony as they did a fine job cleaning up any honey spilled and they were totally oblivious to us, just doing their thing, mad chaos style.

Nice cut out, looks like the comb was just about the right size to fit into some deep frames.

Why was there a hole left in the band board to start with?? At least it made it easier to find the bees.

Good job as usual, hope you eye gets to feeling better and your BIL knee heals up.

slidell was kind of flat last i saw it.  are you finding more cutouts and colonies in the hurricane hit areas, or does that seem to make a difference?

Kathy, I get a lot of tree calls after hurricanes, then things go back to normal. We seem to have certain areas that consistently have a lot of bees, before and after hurricanes. I can't really say that hurricanes bring bees to areas that didn't have them before the storms. Absconding occurs no doubt, but you know those colonies are just looking for a place close by to call home.

ouch, right on the eye. Glad is was not any closer to your eyeball. I would say a two day fishing trip would cure that easily.

I know just what JP needs! A two day fishing trip like the Redneck Fishing Tournament that is going on in MY BACK YARD this weekend!

http://www.redneckfishingtournament.com/

That looks more like a 'whallop from a female fist' than a sting to me.....
But since JP is such a nice guy and has those 'Bambi brown eyes'......I know that he is telling the truth about a nasty ol' bee getting him. :-D
