New guy in Ohio
« on: August 23, 2011, 01:45:16 pm »
Hello!

After several years of casual interest, which morphed into genuine curiosity, which with the discovery of a bee tree in the yard, morphed into fascination, I have finally decided that I will start my first two hives in the spring of 2012. Now it's a matter of deciding what kind of hive to start - 10 frame, 8 frame, deeps and supers, or all mediums - and start gathering the gear. I joined a local club and found them to be very welcoming and excited to have a new member. Beekeepers seem like a nice bunch!

Welcome Buckeye!

Yes it is frustrating trying to figure out what hive configuration to go with.  It would be simpler if everybody did things exactly the same way.  Unfortunately everybody does things differently.  Luckily lots of ways will work.

My advice is to not go overboard buying a ton of equipment until you’ve had a chance to work with a couple of hives for a summer.  You may find half way through next summer that what sounded like a great idea in the forums just doesn’t work well for you.  Once you find a configuration that works well for you, then buy all the extra supers and such you want.

Welcome to the forum, Ohio.   :cheer:

Please consider changing your profile to include your town and state, so we can give you better answers to your questions.

For what it is worth, I use all mediums because of the weight of full boxes.  :brian:

Visit and work with your club and buy equipment as you gain your confidence. (my 2₵)

Most clubs also have mentors who will let you work with their hives beside them.  -Mike
