I was going to write this about a week and a half ago but due to the flow starting early, not having enough supers, nuc boxes, waxed foundations, etc. and work I didnt get to it. But in an effort to expand Marleys and my continuing education we will be attending Michaels bee camp this year. It took some explaining about how the life, let alone the beekeeping skills she will acquire far outweighed anything the last two weeks of school could provide her. But in the end without any strings shes got her hall pass. Shes excited and Im hoping she brings home a ton of knowledge she can input into her beekeeping endeavor. It will be interesting to see how a young mind takes new information learned from one of the best and moves forward. The other thing we talked about was the difference in location, this will be new to her and an important aspect. In writing this I have also become excited for her.
Heck, Im excited also, dont happen much anymore.

That's awesome, Bill! I bet you guys will have a wonderful time! As a former homeschool student and now a homeschool teacher, I can completely vouch for the educational benefit of such an endeavor. :happy:

I like it Michael. When I was a very young boy I was blessed to make a trip out West with my Uncle and Aunt and their family, my cousins. I can't remember what town it was in (I am thinking it was Sioux City SD) but don't quote me I can't remember for sure. But On the outskirts there was a campground which had tee-pees like those you have posted here, one for each site. The camp ground was owned and operated by a Lakota Family who were direct decedents of Sitting Bull. The boys of that family and we, became good friends in a short amount of time. We rode the ponies with them and was invited into their home where they showed us with pride, the bow of their great or great great grandaddy, 'Sitting Bull' (I can't recall for sure which he was, great, great great, or great great great). I was honored that they were so gracious...

That depends on if you were talking to the grandparents, the parents or the kids... Probably not too many greats. It wasn't that long ago.

The design of the tee-pee is brilliant in my opinion.. Shelter from all elements for the people of the regions they were used.. cold, wind, rain, and snow. I bet they were even cool on the hotest days considering the built in draft of the design?

Agreed, and well suited they are.. I did not intend to stray from the main subject of your topic, It is simply I am fantasied at the brilliant design of the Tipi and always have been.. I see from your post, I have been spelling Tipi wrongly, no offense intended.

I didn't even notice how you spelled it. I think you'll find it both ways in the dictionary, but the Lakota spelling is tipi. Just like a sweat lodge is an inipi. "Ti" means "home" and "pi means a structure (lodge, building etc.) So a Tipi is a home while inipi is a sweat lodge and titon (Teaton) means they live on the plains. The Teaton mountans are named after the fact that they look like the tipis of the Teaton Lakota (the Lakota that live on the plains as opposed to the Dakota, Nakota or Jakota who live in other places).

Not a lot of people at Bee Camp this year, but we did a lot. We made 42 double screen boards ala Bill Murray. So far I've used about half of them. I think I may start using these for my mating nucs.

So again Im running behind. Seems at everything this year, but I wanted to give a shout out and a thank you to Michael and his whole family for the two weeks Marley and I spent there at bee camp.
Managing and working bees is managing and working bees, but the conversation in my opinion was the best factor. Mr. Bush has taken the time to research in depth many things that still allude me and us in our endeavors today. That along with the contacts/people he has access to make the conversation amazing.
It took me a lot of years to figure out what worked and didnt work, what management style I wanted, from tracheal mites through varroa. I had just given up at one point. If I had a friend/mentor like him, with his knowledge It would have been a much easier journey, and I may be on a different management style today.
I would advise anyone serious about learning about bees and that has the time, to think about going to his bee camp, or being an apprentice to him. Push forward and make it happen. The personal 1 on 1 time far out-seeds any bee-club or you-tube video.
Also im not a very interweb sort of guy, but his website bush farms.com (http://bush farms.com) has a lot of outstanding info.
Marley is writing something that will be posted at a later date. And again thank you Michael and family.

Not that I can take credit for the weather but the weather was pretty close to perfect the whole time. Of course nights are cooler than days, but if it was any cooler at night Marley might have froze. If it was hotter in the day we could have survived, but it was really quite pleasant. Now it's hot, but it waited until bee camp was over. :) It wasn't a big turnout, but I would have had it just for Marley anyway.
